Riding at Perry

I may go check out Perry for the first time this coming weekend. Being an hour away, i want to make sure this is still a decent place to go ride. What is it like there? Anything challenging? I'm tired of riding allt he concrete here in Olathe, and the gravel roads around here are maintained way too well for my liking

The KLR would be a great machine to go explore the Glade Top trails in Missouri. I've never been down there and want to check it out myself.

A couple of years ago I rode my LC4 at Perry. It can be done, but it was a lot of work. And I hear Perry has gotten really chewed up.

My suggestion would be gravel / min maintenance either to NE KS or W. Check out the county maps for KS at:

I don't ride gravel / min maintenance much now, but I used to (with Troy!).

Thanks everyone. I have been chatting with Troy, and I'm getting a better feeling about riding in Kansas. I am about to buy a gps to mount up on the bike so i can go and find all of these places.

Anyone for riding at Perry Thursday (12/9)? Snow and low temps coming in this weekend and it looks as if the cold will be here a while. I will be out there about 2. It starts getting pretty dark around 4:30 now.

It is not all chewed up, uh, everywhere. Follow me and I can show you some great trail out there, and some not-so-great if you would like that as well.

I'm sure there are plenty of places to get in over my head in Kansas Just takes longer to get there and to find them.

I guess the bike is down for the winter. The rear shock puked its oil. Just ordered a Moab shock from Cogent Dynamics. It will be built and set up for my weight, etc. Went ahead and got the Moab fork springs also. They should work well with the Race Tech emulators I already have in there.

Oh, come on. Winter is not here yet. You can ride today or tomorrow. Just call in well. "I'm well and going to ride my bike!" Tell them Stu said it was OK.

Next weekend might be still good to scream around the woods and I am counting on it. Let's see what the weather brings but go get some fresh gas and get ready to RIDE!

Hey, Stu! I agree! I don't "put my bikes away" for the winter. In fact, I don't do anything different in winter with my bikes, and I keep riding them. I ride less in winter, but I ride.

HOWEVER, I won't be taking a day off and my weekends are booked with family and holiday obligations in December.

I may be giving you a shout soon Troy. I do need a jack though. I want to do some things over the winter.
The wife has already agreed to give me part of the laundry room in the basement for this so I don't freeze to death in the garage. I of course just received the shock and fork springs, but I am changing out the handlebars to ones a little taller, installing new electrical harness with blade type fuses to get rid of the factory glass type tube fuses, valve check and adjust has never been done, brakes, new braided front brake line, getting rid of the rubber factory pegs, rear brake rotor guard, and might even repaint the plastics (have to paint the new front fender so might as well do the whole bike). Somehow I have to sneak all of the parts past the wife and install them one by one without her noticing Sshhhh!

Edit: if it gets any colder, I'm done with riding. Hey, I was born and raised in Pensacola FL! As much as I love riding, the windchill sucks! I wasn't built for this

I've heard that line before.

I am almost done with the KLR, and then I will start working towards buying a dirtbike. I just finally wanted to finish up the suspension to handle my weight. Stupid how kawasaki designed it based around a 150 lb rider. I will most likely keep the KLR until it rots just due to the sentimental value. This is the second motorcycle I have owned, but it sorta feels like the first. Long story short, bought my first bike in 2003. It was a brand new Yamaha R6. 6 weeks later I woke up in a hospital the next day with 2 broken arms wonderng what happened. The bike was totalled, so it was almost like losing a child. Word was that i was going down the road pretty fast and somehow highsided. Just this past summer I was finally able to convince the wife not to divorce me if I bought another bike.

I am so so lusting after a KTM 450 ever since that ride down in Westphalia. Just not sure which model yet. The more I ride and work on the KLR, the more I want a bike that doesn't have lights, mirrors, electric start, etc. I want a bare bones bike that is made to take care of business and not present any troubles out on the trail.

If you are still lusting after a KTM the '03 was a great year. I had one. Zero issues. I would strongly suggest, just because they can be contrary 4-strokes at times, that you have an electric start on a 4-stroke bike. When you drop it and it doesn't fire with the kick starter you can usually get it go go right away with the electric.

If you get a 2-stroke to ride in the woods (my preference) the electric starter is not really necessary. I have an '09 KTM 300 XC-W and I took the electric starter off of it since I never needed it. Well...once, when I stalled on a creek bank after exiting the creek on a hare scramble. However, I got it going anyway, but just a bit longer than the guy behind me would have liked.
