White Cloud ride May 30th.

Post by david h »

This ride will be about 200 miles from Lawrence to White cloud. It is not a ride for beginers, you must feel good riding gravel at 45 to 50 miles per hour. Plenty of gas stops and several places to get lunch. We try this ride every year and have only finnished it about 60-70 percent of the time due to rain/mud, flats, and mechanical issues. I consider it to be one of, if not the best areas Kansas has to offer for dual sport riders.

We will break into several groups, if needed, to keep the dust down. Gps to be posted soon. If you like a slower pace we might be able to make a group for that, assuming someone has and knows how to use a gps.

Start to be at Burger King in North Lawrence (located next to I-70 on north 2nd street) at 7:30am sharp. Try to get there for breakfast and riders meeting around 7. Be gassed up and ready to ride

We could meet Kansas city riders in Tonganoxie if they want to cut a few miles off. we should be there about 8 am.

If any riders want to camp the night before, or the night of the ride we have room at my small farm located 2 miles south of Lawrence or Clinton Lake is nearby also.

respond back if interested, David H

I may be interested if there is a group that will be staying on gravel and dry dirt roads. I'm sure Dave H. won't want me riding in his group, since the last time I spent more time in the mud than upright.

If you are looking for guarantees against mud, unless it has not rained for over a week, don't follow me. I'll be looking for the "adventure". I will try to avoid mud, but chances are, there will be some mud. (David, have I ever led you down a muddy road?!)

I can create a route for you that guarantees no mud, but I must warn you: it is rather boring. I hope you like pavement.

Wait until closer to the date, may have baseball and/or soccer games that weekend. If I can get away, I will try to navigate as much of the ride as possible. Bones may come down from Iowa and ride with us also. He finally got another dual sport.

The meeting spot in Tongie will be the entrance to the county fairgrounds. It is located about 1/4 mile east of Tonganoxie on K 16. we should be there about 8 to 8:15. Don't be late, cause with a big group like we will have we can't wait for you. Be sure to gas up before hand. It should be a fun ride! If you want to meet us there post up and we can wait a little if you are not there.

e mail me if you would like the gps route. hemphill at sunflower dot com 785 331 5779 David h

PS I will try to hang a piece of yellow caution ribbon up by the road when we leave the fairgrounds so you will know you are too late.

I'm considering joining you David. A lot will depend on how much rain we get today and over night. Anyone else from the north side of KC interested in this ride?

I'm heading to SLAP, I was up by White Cloud yesterday tagging the Godfrey Nuzum barn for ADV central photo tag. There may be a young fellow join you all from Lenexa, Ben on a DR650. I told him how nice you guys are so don't make a liar outta me.

Hey David,

I did this ride solo last weekend and the conditions were perfect. I left from Lenexa and started the route in Lawrence. Everything was pretty dry including River Road and the Doniphan County minimum maintenance roads. Talked to a farmer North of Perry and he said they had a bunch of rain the night before yet the roads were dry. Unless we get a ton of rain I imagine things will stay dry.

Unlike our previous attempt, I made it with no flats!! It was a great ride. From Lenexa I clocked 312 miles in nine hours with a few stops for gas and pics. I wouldn't mind doing this ride again and may join you this weekend. I think I ended up on more pavement than your route would include so I'll be curious to see what I missed. Hopefully I'll see you Saturday.

-Greg

You know it! The comfort seat helps but you still end up with some monkey butt.

I finally took Mark "Big Dog" Sampson's advice and purchased some "Anti-Monkey Butt" powder from Walmart for my 950 mile ride Memorial Day weekend. That stuff works well. Main point is--keep things dry. Whatever you do, don't accidentally buy the "Monkey-Butt" powder! You want the "Anti Monkey Butt" powder. That other stuff will mess you up.

Ha! Yes, the anti-monkey butt powder for sure.

Wish this ride were on Sunday instead of tomorrow. Got way too much stuff to do tomorrow. I haven't even cleaned the bike from last week's ride yet. You guys have fun and good luck. I'll catch you on the next one.

Hey guys, hope you had fun on your ride today. I love that ride, and have done it many times. The mud up there is sticky as snot and really hard to throw off the tires. I am in Thailand right now, and will be motorcycling through Cambodia in a couple of weeks. Should be pretty cool. If you ever have the chance, come to SE Asia some day. Really cheap to travel here, people are really nice too.
