Sept 20 & 21, 2008: MATT Trials
Mid-America Trials Team 35th Annual Quarry Cup 2008
If you've never watched a trials competition, you are really missing out. These guys are magicians on motorcycles. The events are family-friendly. Personally, I really hope to make it but I have possible schedule conflicts.
The full scoop can be read at the M.A.T.T. webiste:

This event is located in Trenton, MO.
GLBarton recommends you come watch the trials.

Troy, I'm interested in going. Either day works for me. Let's see what the weather is like as it gets closer.

I was able to see two days of the National Trials at Duluth a couple of weeks ago. It's hard to believe how talented the Pro riders are and how painful their crashes are. Imagine falling backwards off a 12 of 15 ft cliff than having your bike land on top of you. Get up, shake it off, and ride the next section! Well worth watching! These guys don't get nearly enough exposure.

Well, the weather is looking good for this. Anyone thinking about going. I could go either day and would like to take two lane up there instead of I-35.

I'm in. I'd like to ride my V-strom and take whatever back pavement we can find. Kware, are you thinking of riding the Harley? Is at least some gravel an option? I'm open to all of it. Considering the distance, I don't want to do a long, winding gravel route all the way up--just don't have the desire to put that much time in the saddle this weekend, and don't want to miss the trials.Kware wrote:Well, the weather is looking good for this. Does Rusty of MC Closeouts want to come? If so, Sunday could work for him as he runs the store on Sat.

I might be able to go too, but it would have to be Sunday.

No on the Harley. The DRZ400 is my ride forthis weekend. Two lane black top works for me and Sunday works as well. I looked at a route from 92 that is about 90 miles?????
Again, I am open to anything but I-35 on the DRZ400

Okay, how about a 72 mile, from Smithville, two lane highway route instead of 90 miles.
Early morning quick breakfast somewhere?

Troy and Kware,
Mom said I can go on a road trip! So I'm in if everything works out. The ole KLR650 will be making the trip...
I need to know about timing, meet coordinates to get from Kincaid to Troy's and then north.
Bill

Bill, the event starts around 10:30. From the Smithville area we have at least a 2 hour ride, so how long it takes you to get up to Overland Park from Kincaid will have to be determined by you and Troy. Not use if Hank is in, but he is up this way so he can meet us in Smithville.
Looks like it could be a early ride for you, so we do not have to plan a breakfast meet on this end of town if it works better for you.

Sounds like fun, Will.
So Saturday or Sunday? I'm voting for Sunday. The times are different.
Sat.Sept.20th
A.M. Riders – 10:30AM
P.M. Riders – 1:30 PM
Sun Sept 21st
A.M. Riders – 9:00 AM
P.M. Riders – 12:00 PM
Kevin, it sounds like you have a route picked out that will work and cut out some miles while staying of I-35. I quickly built a route, too, that uses county and state highways--the twistiest ones I could find--and it ended up being 100 miles. It's mostly a direct route, but obviously there are quicker ways. It's 100 miles from Liberty to Trenton on my route...so I'd have more miles than that coming from Overland Park and Will would have a LOT more miles.
http://www.marengo-ltd.com/map2/index.php?route=5689
I'm fine with a 300 mile day since I'll be on my VStrom and the route is pavement (there is a section I'm not sure of...but if it ends up being gravel, that's cool, too)
Problem is....Sunday's events start early at 9AM. I'm fine with not getting there until the noon events start. I just want to enjoy the ride, watch anywhere from 1 to 4 hours of trials, then enjoy the ride home.
I'm quite sure Daryl won't want to ride his Husky this distance! (I would not.)
Thoughts?

Sunday for sure for me. Thanks for getting the correct starting time. I am good for any time we want and route. I agree that we can't make the 9:00 start. You guys coming from the south can dictate the time, since you have longer to ride. Tell me a time that you will be coming through Liberty, Kearney, Holt or Smithville and I can meet you.

Sunday is the day for me!
Getting to Trenton between 9:00 and 12:00 sounds good. I can be on the road at sunrise. I'd like to head home early enough to get home before sunset. MapQuest had me about 190 miles one way to Trenton.
Troy, give me a time and meet coordinate so I can figure out when to leave. I just don't want to leave when the roads are pitch black. Toooooo many skunks out this time of year !!!!

I spoke to Ken Brown on the phone and he gave me the gate code. I suppose I should not publish it here in the public forum, so call me if you want the gate code. 816-739-9653
On a whim, I asked about camping. He said you can camp right there on the trials grounds. Also, there is a State Park 1/4 mile up the road. They are having a big bonfire and feeding all the participants Sat night. He said, stick around, there will probably be enough food for everyone he spends the evening.
So...this is very last minute...but I'm considering throwing my tent and bag in the Givis and camping overnight to return home mid-day Sun. Any takers?

Sorry these details are coming together so late.
I plan to be at the Corner Cafe in Liberty by 9AM SATURDAY to enjoy some coffee & eggs.
Bill, if you get this in time--I HOPE YOU DO--I'll be leaving my house around 8AM. I live in the South part of Overland Park near the 151st Street exit on Hwy 69. There is a QuickTrip at that exit on the SE corner. I could meet you there around 8AM.
Call me on my mobile at 816.739.9653 if you want me to expect you.
After breakfast, I have a 100 mile route from Liberty to the trials near Trenton. The route should be all pavement, but I don't know all those roads, so no guarantees. I figure I'll hang around for a few hours enjoying the competition then head home. The route home is Kevin's shorter route--still avoiding I-35 as much as possible.
Any more riders want to enjoy a fantastic day of food, riding, and moto-competition?
