Went for the first ride (one previous commute doesn't count) on the KLR
today. Only 110 miles but at least half of it was gravel roads between
Orrick, Mo City, Excelsior and Kearney. I think I am going to like
this thing. Sure glad I had the heated vest and most excellent FG
winter gloves or I would have made it 10 miles. I am ready for some
more. Don't miss the BMW anymore! I can't believe this bike has been
around since 87 or whatever. Where have I been?

If you don't already have them, invest in some heated grips. Cheap ($25) and they allow me to ride comfortably at much lower temps. Btw my heated vest and heated grips I can stay comfortable way down on the temp scale. Glad to hear somebody else is nuts enough to ride in the recent weeks.

I was doing great untill I hopped on I-35 at Kearney to head home. Didn't take long to get cold at 75MPH, even with the vest.safiri wrote:If you don't already have them, invest in some heated grips. +1. Heated grips are awesome. I have the kit Dual Star sells for like $25. Well worth it.
Also, if you want to add a relay to the KLR for add on goodies, there is a nice little pocket behind the right shroud. I added two, just a simple and cheap way to have one going to my aux outlet and one to the grips without having to spend $$ on a fancy fuse block. I can tap them and up the fuse off the battery if I decide I need anything else. I think I spent about $50 for the whole electrical upgrade.

I chuckle when coworkers remark to me, after I have pulled in on my bike when the temps are well below 30 and the wind is howling, that the windchill must make it cold. Heck, at 75 I am always getting a lot of wind.carlrf wrote:I was doing great untill I hopped on I-35 at Kearney to head home. Didn't take long to get cold at 75MPH, even with the vest.
