It's been called the Kansas Dakar. It's a pretty long day in the saddle. Hot and dusty, sometimes fast. Not for newbies: We will often cruise at 60 MPH+ on loose gravel. 80 miles between gas stops. Lunch in Atchison. It's a blast. Please join us. We hope to have at least five riders, maybe more. Lots of stops, but you will be worked. Little bikes are fine, big bikes are fine. I'll try to get the Garmin MapSource file posted by 6/21 or so, but if you don't have GPS, don't sweat it.
Start at the North Lawrence Burger King. Head north through Tonganoxie, Easton and Jarbalo area on the way to Kickapoo. Hit the (rutted? muddy?) River Road to Atchison. Lunch at Paolucci's (113 North 3rd Street; Atchison, Kansas 66002-2836 913-367-6105) around 11:30 AM. Then north to Wathena and the sandy, glacial hills of Doniphan County. Noodle around the Missouri River floodplain, west to White Cloud, go up the overlook platform, see Iowa and Nebraska and Missouri. Then blast south on long straight gravels for an hour to Oscalousa, then twisty, shaded Buck Creek Road south to Lawrence.
Please post if you plan to ride. Bring a friend. Re-post this anywhere you like.
Depart 8:00 AM from:
North Lawrence Burger King
(NOT Sixth St. Burger King!)
1100 North 3rd Street, Lawrence, KS 66044 785/842-4298

Might be in for this one if I'm back from wheat harvest - got to get my time in the fields every year to remind me what Kansas is all about. Been wanting to make this ride for a few years. Let you know as the time draws nearer.

As a survivor of the Kansas Dakar two years ago I can assure you that it is a great ride, but long. Your butt will get sore and you will want to crank up the rpms on the long gravel straights.
Chris I won’t be able to make the whole ride this year, but I will likely meet you for lunch!

Likewise, I won't be able to do the entire day, so Daryl, I'd like to ride the River Road to Atchison with you to meet up for lunch. The timing could be tricky, but we'll cross our fingers.Daryl Perry wrote:Chris I won’t be able to make the whole ride this year, but I will likely meet you for lunch!
BadCompany, if we run across you, you can ride with us to meet the Greenhoot clan in Atchison...or hook up with them...whoever you see first I suppose.
Your math teacher wrote:OK, class.... if one group of dualsport riders leaves Lawrence, KS at 8:00 AM heading towards Atchison, KS and maintains an average speed of 68.3 MPH allowing for 3 breakdowns averaging 20 minutes each, and another group of dualsport riders plans to depart from Kansas City and average 42.7 MPH with zero breakdowns, what time should the group from Kansas City depart to meet the Lawrence group in Atchison?
The answer is blue...no...green. AAAAAAHHH!

It's good to see some enthusiasm for this ride. I guess it pays for the leader to post two weeks ahead.
North Lawrence Burger King couldn't be easier to find. That's why we're meeting there. It certainly isn't for the food. If you eat there, I don't like your chances of finishing this ride.
Get on I-70. Go to Exit 204 "East Lawrence Exit." Get off. Go south 100 meters. Get gas next door. Get on your bike. Twist throttle and hang on.
Here is a nice MAP that you can print:

Hey, I may even be up for this. See if I can get some sprockets and a chain on the XRR before its time to depart. Oh and a tire.
I saw the electricion at Wakarusa this last weekend. We talked for a bit about this area. Been wanting to come up and do it for some time now. The milage is a drop in the bucket. My weekend in the flinthills will hit 300+ for the day. Will get back to this for a yea or nea when closer.

BIG bikes?
Hey I caught this on the ADV site. I will be there if'n I get my TKC's mounted on the big strom. There are a couple of other big bikes that have a little less experience that want to come. I was wondering if I can get the directions or road names so I can lead the big bike contingent?
I can also show up early with my topo map pages that we are going to be on and it should take less than two minutes for you to show me the route.
Looking forward to it.
