UPDATE: Click here to get the sanitized follow-up track and info. Go ride this!

This is VERY LAST MINUTE! If any of you happen to see this and want to join us, be in Williamsburg, KS by 9:30 am Sat morning.

Larry & I are going to explore Osage County, KS.

The track I built is 122 miles. Lunch is in Reading, KS at the Miracle Cafe. Might be an early lunch. The track includes a stop to trespass at the SM-65E Atlas ICBM Missile Silo Site. The entire facility is flooded at the moment as I understand. Apparently it's a nice, safe place to let your young children run around...with open pits into dirty, dark water. (See the 1st video)

Lots of miles of minimum maintenance to enjoy as well as some other tidbits.

What a GREAT ride Larry & I had! The track I slapped together the night before turned out SO good--much better than I expected. I found a ton of min maint roads and was able to string them together so that we were never riding long before hitting another rough, grassy 2-track or even bush-whacking through long-ago closed bridges. At times we were winding through tunnels of trees along the rivers. In a few miles, we'd be high on a hill looking over wild flowers that were in full array.

I rode 60+ miles from Overland Park to Williamsburg, KS. Larry rode N from his place about 20 or so miles. I ended up arriving 40 minutes early. I put the kickstand down next to the city park which had a decent restroom facility. The 2 blocks of town seemed dead--nobody stirring. I walked over to a shop named "Pass The Time, Coffee, Tea, and Collectibles". I was reading the various signs in the window next to the "CLOSED" sign when a lady opened the door and invited me to come in, have a cup of coffee and a snack, and look around. When I entered, I found a dining table with 5 ladies enjoying conversation. I grabbed a cup of lousy coffee from the old coffee pot and sat down at the table. I had a great time chatting about small town life and other fine things. I also enjoyed a small piece of banana bread from the community plate on the table. I looked up to see Larry roll by on Main Street, so I said my goodbyes. On my way out, I turned the CLOSED sign around to OPEN. They hollered out, "Thanks!"

Larry and I took a couple minutes to give thanks for the beautiful weather we'd been gifted with and the freedom we enjoyed to ride our motorcycles, then it was kickstands up.

The route was a big clockwise loop around Osage County, so we headed West. Very soon we hit a beautiful, winding, dirt road. When we neared the end of it, Larry remarked, "That might be the most beautiful road we see all day." The best was yet to come!

As we crossed under the railroad, we took time to appreciate the local art. Clearly the youth in this area have embraced people of all skin colors and religions--even writing their love in 2 foot tall letters for all to see.

(The pictures below do not express the opinions of the RideForum.NET community or myself.)

Image

The above might be explained by...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

We road mile after mile of grass-covered roads. We had to be careful because sometimes you could not see the ruts and other hazards. It was slow going, but we sure weren't complaining. At one point I said to Larry, "You know you are on some remote roads when the county mows the roads instead of grading them!" :-)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Larry had told me the Miracle Cafe in Reading, KS offers some good eats, so I put it in the route. Unfortunately, it closes at 11 am on Saturday. Apparently they do a special brunch on Saturdays. We rolled in just after 11:30 and sat on their porch to enjoy our snack and water.

Image

I commented how clean and tidy the town seemed. Larry reminded me that this town was mostly wiped out by the tornado in 2011 so was rebuilt.

Refreshed from our break, we put the gravel back in our travel.

Image

Image

Image

I think Larry took a panaromic photo in this spot. Seriously a LOT of these "roads" in Osage County.

Image

What was funny was that despite the lack of maintenance and how remote these roads were, almost every intersection had what looked like a shiny, new road sign like this one that was at the road in the pic above:

Image

Image

Image

We enjoyed checking out this abandoned Atlas ICBM Missile Silo.

Image

Here we are parked on the massive roof that would open to launch the missile.

Image

Short video of Larry riding off the ICBM roof:
https://photos.smugmug.com/ADV-2012-09- ... 2-1920.mp4

The entire facility was full of water.

Image

When I built the route, there were 5 "iffy" spots I had marked with waypoints to indicate "this may not work out". Two of those spots did not work out causing us to route around. We had a 3rd road that ended up being a no-go. It had been a road a long time ago, but was what I consider impassable now and seemed marked with purple paint so has probably gone back to the land owner.

This photo was taken as we came out on the other end of a particularly rough road that challenged us with several deep, muddy sections we were able to work around.

Image

This next photo was taken at what appears to be a nearly abandoned, remote North entrance to Carbolyn State Park.

Image

Next comes our most ambitious road of the day. I had marked this road with a "Rough" waypoint to indicate we might have to route around this one. The KDOT county map and Google showed the road not going through anymore. The satellite imagery suggested we might be able to get through on our bikes, but much was hidden by tree cover. The road started with this warning:

Image

The road was very rough in spots with a few mud holes. In what seemed like 3/4 of a mile, we came to this seemingly perfect bridge:

Image

The river here was beautiful, and I imagine was a popular spot before this road closed.

Image

At first it appeared this bridge would be the end of the road as the weeds were too thick to see through at the other end. I walked through them, and in perhaps 50 feet, the road opened back up a bit--so we rode on...

...until we came to this--the real bridge out! This is looking East.

Image

This time it seemed we might really be turning back...but hold on...here is the view looking back West from the other side of what is now a grown-over bridge.

Image

The locals have built ATV and motorcycle trails down in this hollow, so there was a bit of a single-track to get up onto the bridge and about an 8 foot very steep drop-off on the other side to get off the bridge into the woods so you could route around back onto the road. We made it look easy!

Image

We made it! :-)

More remote, grassy roads!

Image

Image

Image

Mile after mile! 8-)

By the very late afternoon, we were passing by minimum maintenance roads as we were running out of time. I left the house at 7 am and returned home at 8 pm. Just about 250 miles for me. A great day riding beautiful roads with a very good friend. :-D

Looks like it was an awesome ride, thanks for the RReport Troy!

Was what you guys did indentical to the GPS track you posted above, or did you have to make some changes to the route?

Thx!

It was almost perfect, and for sure, you could take the original track I posted, start anywhere on the loop and just ride it. You'll come to 3 places you have to route around, but it's easy to do so. I think a lot of people would be inclined to turn around at that bridge that was out, but I want to encourage folks to push through there--it wasn't difficult and was one of the highlights.

In that spirit, I plan to clean up the track and post up an "official" Osage County track for folks to ride. I might even lead a group on it at a later date--it is as worthy as any KS dualsport route. Like most of the KS minimum maintenance roads, you would not be able to attempt this route when wet.

Inspiring report and pictures! That makes me want to get the bike out and head that direction. The YouTubes were interesting too, which of course led to more YouTubes about that location. Thank you for sharing.

I have attached the sanitized follow-up track for others to go ride! The GPX file is attached to this post. The file includes a few helpful POI. The track is < 500 points so it will load on even older GPS units.

You can view the route here in RideWithGPS.com. This is the browser-based tool I use to create my tracks and clean them up post-ride.
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/24931119

The track is a 125 mile loop. You can start it anywhere in the loop. You can easily ride the track either direction with the exception of one spot. There is a bridge out on E 197th St just North of Pomona Lake. If you are going West to East, it's pretty easy but has a steep incline to drop off on the East side to get back onto the road. If going East to West, you'd have to ride up this incline, which for many riders on large ADV bikes could be daunting.

The only reason the track drops into Osage City is for gas and/or food. You could change that up a little if you wanted, but if you stray too far, you'll miss some great roads.

Enjoy!

Depending on what GPS unit you have, there is usually more than one way to skin that cat.

For example, on my old Garmin 60CS, I could not simply mount the storage as a USB drive. Neither did it support a Micro SD card, so I couldn't pop out the card to access it. With that old GPS, I would fire up Garmin's Mapsource (back in the day) or later, Garmin's Basecamp. I would import the GPX file. Garmin's software then allowed me to drag the route/track/whatever onto the GPS unit over the USB cable.

With more modern units--including my Garmin 76, in addition to the method described above, I can simply plug the unit into my computer using the USB cable, which causes my computer to mount both the internal storage as well as the SD card. All I have to do is copy the GPX file into the Garmin/GPX folder of either the built in storage or SD card. I always choose the SD card since it has tons of free space.

Personally, I don't even use Garmin's software in my process any more.

On a related note, if you are still working with .gdb files (Garmin's proprietary format), wake up and smell the coffee in 2017! GPX is the modern, simple, brand-agnostic, compatible way to communicate your GPS data--and has been for perhaps a decade.

I have gone to the cell phone route for my GPS and couldn't be happier. I'm using a Keyocera Duraforce phone which is water, shock, and dust proof (to a point) and cost me $75.00 plus $20.00 for a micro SD card. I use OsmAnd app on the phone which works offline so you don't need cell service or a data plan and the app is $6.00. To plan my routes I use RideWithGPS like Troy does, I forget how much it is for full version but it is not much. So for under $100.00 I have a great GPS, a camera and I can store a lot of music if I want.

Here's a great link to ADV rider step by step on cell phone for GPS thread if you want to know more. http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/u ... e.1206076/

Cool stuff - I'll have to compare your route with mine. We hit most of that last time but that bridge out. It's a great area for those that have not been there. Its the most flooded that silo has been.

Thanks again for putting together such a great ride Troy. It was truly a last minute decision, in only 12 hours from when we decided to ride Osage county we were riding it. Amazing work on Troys part in putting this route together ,the actual building of it, in only an hour. Wow what a fun day ,and challenging to , that always happens when riding with Troy. I ended up taking my 1190 places that I would consider 250 or at the max 690 type terrain The keynote of the day was upon seeing a bridge out sign "we better go see if it is really out". We even found some min. maint. pavement , there really is a lot of min. maint. roads in this county. Would have posted earlier but the day after this ride left for a 3 day 470 mile ride into southern ks and north central ok. Have had a lot of good riding in the last 5 days.
A good day of riding with a good friend.

Rode this today. Lotsa fun, thanks!
Saw some adventurous looking guys in Pomona where we started
(Went clockwise) then met them going the other direction just before we got to the missle silo.
Water at the silo is down s good bit from what it looks like in your pic but still looks to be about 5' deep at the main entrance. Kinda creepy to stand right above where all that firepower used to be. We were wondering whose name was on our particular bird. I found the single solitary 5' long mud hole on the entire track and buried the GS up to the axle. Took both of us to get it out.
The bridge out section was interesting. We noticed several single tracks heading away from the old bridge. With signs and names. Were wondering if that area was COE ground based on how close it was to the lake.
Thanks again!

DirtyOldMan & Ramkas,

GLAD you guys enjoyed the track! The 2 riders you encountered were none other than our own Luc (gagnaou) and the famous Bill Congers, who will compete in the 2018 Dakar. He also competed in 2012 I think.

Together with Luc & Bill and many others, I was attending the fantastic TC to KC BBQ event this past weekend. Luc & Bill did a 240 mile or so route from the McLiney Ranch up to do the Osage County loop and back.

Yep, it was us!

Sure was a fun ride! Troy missed one rider of our group, John from Arkansas was in the middle .

When we saw you guys, we thought maybe you were going to be at the BBQ that night, unfortunately not or we could have exchanged some riding stories! Sorry to hear about the mud hole, we were able to find a pretty easy way around all of them!
