April 28 29, Randolph (Tuttle), School Crk (Milford), etc

Post by safiri »

Tracy (Hayden) and I plan on meeting up at Fancy Creek campground, just north of Randolph, Saturday morning or Friday evening and riding Saturday and Sunday. On the agenda are Randolph OHV and School Creek OHV areas. Also ready will be Luc's route from last fall.

If wet we will do more gravel road riding. If dry we will do more OHV riding.

Knobbies would be a definite plus, if not requirement for the OHV areas.

We will be camping Saturday evening. I will be arriving in my tan 1994 Explorer pulling a 5 x 10 trailer. My ride will be a grey KTM LC4 that hasn't been washed in a long time. Tracy's ride will be ... who knows which of his stable he will bring out.

If you want to camp, I will have a Coleman 2-burner stove and pots and pans as well as a 5 gallon water jug (no water in campground). Nearest groceries are probably in Manhattan. There is/was a cafe in Randolph. Not sure of its status.

Now, what a coincidence this is!! I was just up working in the Manhattan area this week. I had to perform a safety test on a 1935 elevator in the Clay County Historical Museum on Wednesday. The elevator should be it's prime attraction. On the way back to the Hampton Inn in Manhattan I took a drive across the Tuttle Creek dam and spillway area since my co-worker hadn't seen it before. We stopped off at the Spillway Cycle Area on the Southwest side of the dam and dreamed about riding for a while. I didn't stay too long 'cause it was too painful not having my motorcycle w/ me. Anyway, I was just dreaming up a good camping/riding weekend at Tuttle because it really is a beautiful area to ride....count me in!

I've got plenty of gear and when I am on my own(w/out wife) I prefer primitive camping. Hoooraahhh

Tracy, you want to haul up together? Your trailer or mine? I'll give you a ring tomorrow if I can ride w/ you on Sat.

Havent decided what to do yet. I was thinking about planning a route up to Tuttle. (Off Road) and just ride the XRR up. Much less gas money that way. I get off at 4 on Fri and was thinking about leaving then. But Im flexable.

I haven't ridden the area around the dam. Randolph is 15 miles to the north on the west side of the lake. Heck, one more area to add to the list to check out.

As to camping ... primitive. For those coming up, I have usually camped near the trees with a view of the lake.

Here is a map of Tuttle and where I plan on camping:

The Spillway Cycle Area isn't near as big, only about a couple square miles of land, but it would be worth checking out. If nothing else, the roads to and from the dam would be fun to ride with plenty of scenery. I going to plan a geo-cache ride around Tuttle reservoir when Troy can get back in the game. Maybe this fall.

I would like to meet up with you guys somewhere on Sat if my wife will let me break loose. lol
I don't really want to ride long distances though as I only have a 200cc, but I love to joy ride on trails.

PS I live about 2 miles from the small trails in Manhattan. :)

Count me in when you do the geocache ride. I have found most of the caches but new ones are always popping up.

Yeah, I could do that. I'm out of town this week but I should be home by Thursday night. Did you make it out to ride the Flint Hills last Saturday? It was one windy day to be on a motorcycle. I rode the DRZ to Jeeps to watch the motocross races Sunday morning...not much fun when you're leaning about 45 degrees into 45mph gusts!

This will be my first official camping trip of the year. I can't wait to get away from modern technology!! (except for your GPS, Mike)
Looking forward to riding w/ you guys,

On my GPS (and updated on this site tomorrow for download) I will have a route btw Randolph OHV and School Creek OHV, a route from Randolph down to Box Turtle Rd and back, and Luc's route from last fall.

More than we can do, but plenty to keep us busy.

As to camping details:
-Breakfast: grape nuts and milk?
-Lunch: Bagels and sliced cheese?
-Snack: Granola bars with peanuts (I will bring).
-Supper: ??? Brats, burgers, chili, what? Fri and Sat? I can cook dang near anything on an open fire so a Coleman two-burner will be easy.
-Dessert: ??? Jiffy cake mix and a large can of fruit (crushed pineapple)

-Refreshment: I have a case or so of Tecate in cans in the fridge. That works for me and then some. I need some limes though.

Who wants to bring food? (Hint, hint) ... and limes!

I will bring the cook gear (pots, pans, utensils, bowls) and stove, granola bars, and beer.

Can you get a Coleman 2 burner hot enough to bake a Jiffy cake mix???

I can bring most of the food.

Cereal and milk for breakfasts
Bagels, PB & Honey, Cheese? for lunch
Hamburgers and baked beans for a dinner
Bud Light for dessert
I would be happy to bring a Jiffy cake mix, and I love pineapple, or did you plan on pre-baking that?

I celebrated a B-day not too long ago at Fall River Reservoir. Mom brought her dutch oven along and baked one of the best birthday cakes I have ever had the pleasure of tasting!

KC.

How do you want to do this? I just have my little Toyota truck. The trailer is a 100 mile round trip to go get from the home place. Do you have a small trailer. Doubt we could get both bikes in the back of my truck and coolers. gear, etc.

I have a bunch of deer burger here at the house I can bring, fry up before hand? etc.

MIKE. No coffee for me. I quit.

Yes.

I have a Dutch oven as well, so if we can get some coals from a fire we could do that too.

Either way.

All the food listed sounds way good.

I will try to remember to throw in some coffee.

We could cram everything in my Dodge...but it'll be easier if we take my trailer. I'm still shopping for a toy hauler/camper. Not a lot of affordable options out there. hmmmm...nothing wrong with my $50 tent and $600 flatbed trailer

OK Sounds good. I will bring some cereal that I have left over from the week and a lb of Deer/elk. One of each should do us for Sat night right?

I get off at 4 and will head to your house right after. I may make a stop or 2. Look for me around 5:30.
