Colorado OHV permit

We were all set to leave this Friday for a week of riding in Colorado when my son broke his arm. Needless to say, the trip is cancelled. I had pre-purchased two Colorado OHV permits and was thinking maybe somebody could use them. Since it appears that I'm not going to make it this year, anybody going to CO can have the permits. They aren't bike specific so anybody could use them. They would save you the $50 and the hassle of having to find a place to purchase.

If interested, let me know and we can figure a way to get them to you.

Don't feel bad, Randy. Colorado is overrated. Why ride the mountains when you can run KS gravel?

Last week Brian, Tracy, and I stop at the Yamaha dealer in Silverthorne to buy permits. Owner, a very nice guy, tells us he doesn't sell them but the FS regional office (two blocks away) does. He sees our plated KTM's on the trailer and asks us why we need permits. Short story, seems nobody in Summit county can figure out where/when an OHV sticker is required for a plated vehicle. Even the 20 year employee of the FS didn't know (but did express that she needed to find out more info).

We bought them ... $25.50 for CO trails seems like a good thing.

It is interesting / frustrating that the FS employees selling the permits don't even know. However, my logic says when you are out riding maintained, Forest Service signed singletrack, the fact you have a road title and license plate don't mean anything while on that trail. The permit is payment to use the trail system.

I know when we were out there last week SOMEBODY spent many, many hours cutting through downed trees so I could enjoy the trail. THANK YOU!

Several years ago we were stopped on a trail by a forest ranger. My bike was plated but no permit. He didn't give me a ticket but said if you ride single track, ATV trail or 4WD trail that you need a permit. Every year since we've purchased the permits regardless of where we ride in CO. Figure it is well worth the $25 to ride those type trails....heck, that's cheaper then a Chadwick annual pass and I consider that to be a bargain.

With our governments, "efficiency", the $25 probably doesn't pay for their cost of administrating the collection of the $25 permits. Maybe next year we can ride in the 51st state!

Depending on the weather I'm considering your ride. I've never been there....is there some decent riding or is it more straight, level gravel roads? I haven't looked at a map, but how far from Chadwick?

Depending on the weather I'm considering your ride. I've never been there....is there some decent riding or is it more straight, level gravel roads? I haven't looked at a map, but how far from Chadwick?

It looks like the campground is around 90 miles or so north of Chadwick. As for the terrain around Pomme de Terre, it will all be maintained gravel roads. All of the riding we did last time was really mellow, but the scenery was nice. I'll be riding my 990 and you would probably enjoy the ride more on your BMW than your 450.

We're really just planning on this being a nice, easy ride for Alissa to get back on a bike. She hasn't ridden anything since we sold her KLX this past spring, so I didn't want to throw her back into anything she wasn't comfortable with.
