Dakar

Post by Foster »

We met with Dakar team from Freedom multiple times this year. I was really excited to follow their progress but I can't seem to find good race coverage. We all knew this was an ongoing issue but has anyone found a good source (or even just an ok source) for race coverage? Following them on Facebook just isn't doing it for me.

In prior years I found a daily torrent of the Australian coverage. It was a 30 minute show with 10 minutes for bikes, 10 minutes for cars, and 10 minutes for the big trucks. I could get it one day behind.

I remember putting them on my web server and linking to them for people on Backroadstouring.org in the days before RideForum. I was quickly slapped for posting illegal content. OK, technically it was illegal to share the recordings....of an Australian TV show that you could not buy and no other coverage options. 8)

You only get to hear about the top, big names, though.

I found a torrent on one sight and it is currently downloading but it appears to the same sort of thing. I guess it may have to do unless someone comes up with something else. The one I found is from Eurosport.

I chose the Australian coverage because it was in English. :) As big as the Dakar is, it's still has a very small niche of fans in the US. Most people I ask have never heard of the race. Of course, most "regular" folk I know have never heard of "KTM" either.

Please let us know if you find a good source--I do enjoy watching the coverage.

Hah, I got a new calendar for work, and noticed that the Dakar started on Saturday and spent a few minutes looking for coverage. Couldn't really find anything worthwhile, but, I am downloading a video from a certain site located in a rustic Switzerland bay that has the Eurosport Highlights from Days 1 and 2.

I am thinking we may be on the same "certain site" I am going to check the video when I get off work. Let me know how it is if you watch it before 5. I am very curious.

Watched the first 10 minutes or so, which focused on motorbikes. Seems a large portion of the coverage was focused on the beginning of the rally, who was in, who was out, etc. Not a lot of actual bike footage in the first day's highlights.

Hopefully the footage gets a bitter better and more focused on subsequent days.

Each episode, at least the ones I am watching, are roughly 30 minutes each. So, figure 10 for bikes and quads, 10 for cars, 10 for trucks.

I really wish something as big as the Dakar got more coverage especially when I have to sit through 3873 hours of figure skating coverage every 4 years. No offense to any figure skaters, but, not exactly my cup of tea for entertainment.

Ask Eddie what his wife does for a living.

Agreed though! Hard to believe there are more people in the US that want to watch hours of figure skating compared to off-road racing. Of course I feel that way about baseball--ugh...watching paint dry.

Try being stuck in a house with a former figure skater turned figure skating pro turned figure skating judge. She can find 3,873 hours of skating EVERY Year. And when my daughter, a gold medal skater, lived with us they could find that many hours of skating EVERY month.

Now you can start to understand why I have my own cabin in the country.

Eddie, my naive self only knows about gold medals in relation to the Olympics? Is your daughter an Olympic gold medalist?

It's OK because you said "no offense" in your statement. You see, you can say the most offensive things as long as you preface it with "no offense, but...". Example: "No offense, but, you Harley pirates are a bunch of FAGS." See, it's not offensive to Harley riders or FAGS because it was specifically prefaced with "no offense...". I think this is universally understood and accepted.

Exactly, like "No offense Troy, but BMW's are for douchebags". Or "No offense honey, but those jeans make you look fat". It's all good. :P

A gold medal in figure skating is the minimum requirement to qualify for the Olympics. Once you get to that level you can then compete in Regional, National and then International competitions. My daughter competed in Regionals.

If you have Directv they have it on NBCSports channel 220. You will want to record it because it plays at about 1:00AM each day. It's a 30 minute highlite or about 20 min after you fast forward through the commercials.
