Our next meeting is set for Dec. 4th at 6:30 at Freedom Cycle:

Scott Spears will make a presentation on the following topics;

Recluse clutch.
How to fix a flat on the trail.
Tools and parts to carry.
How to deal with a swamped bike.

We decided it would be easiest for everybody to bring their own meal into Freedom. Scott said we will be using one of their backrooms so no problem for food and drink.

Should be good as Scott said he has several items for, "show and tell"!

As usual, everybody is invited!

Ryan got pulled over by the police as he left Freedom Cycles. What was the outcome of that? Speeding I assume?

Many thanks to Scott and Freedom Cycles and Randy for putting this together. I could listen to Scott tell Dakar stories all day I think. I really enjoyed the tech talk, too. Believe it or not, it was my first time in Freedom Cycles. That place is AWESOME! How long have they been a KTM dealer? I only heard of this a few months ago. They had a nice, large selection of riding gear, too. The guys from Freedom I've met so far are really great people, too. Let's just say my expectations for motorcycle dealers in general are usually not very high!

During the tire HOWTO, I kept thinking how much better it would have been if we'd had a tire and wheel and the tools right there to see a demonstration and even get hands-on instruction. That is the only criticism I have that might help future meetings that focus on tech tips.

Can someone post a link to the YouTube video(s) that Scott and others mentioned that show a master changing tires?

The free bikes were very generous of Freedom Cycles. My new KTM 500 EXC-F is going to look awesome in the garage next to my KTM 350 EXC-F! My collection is complete!

We saw that cop sitting there when we left, but we figured everyone would see him as they were leaving although I did think to myself that someone could get in trouble. It sucks that Ryan got nabbed.

I saw Ryan leave and it didn't look like he gave the cop any provocation for the stop! Jessie and I could not figure out what he had done. We saw him discussing the stop with the officer when we went by. Hopefully the cop just wanted to take a look at the mighty wee-strom

The meeting was a really good time. Thanks for setting it up Randy (and/or others?)! I do agree with Troy that a live demonstration would have been awesome! If you give dual sport riders a cookie...

But it was a really neat experience just the way it was too.

First, I really enjoyed the meeting last night. I hope to remember some of that when needed.
Regarding my incident with the Grandview PD......
The first indication of any police around was the reflection of the cruisers lights off the highways signs.
I thought to myself, where is he going. I thougt at first he was on the highway.
I pulled over by the light to let him around. It kinda surprised me that I was his prey.
When asked the "Do you know why I pulled you over?" line, I assumed I must have been speeding.
I don't know what the speed limit on the outer road is, nor do I know how fast I was going.
I soon found out that when I left the parking lot at Freedom and turned right onto the outer road, I didn't make a complete stop. I was standing on the pegs, and looked both ways, and saw no traffic. So, I rolled through and was on my way to get on the highway. It seemed like a long ways after that when I saw the lights. I don't know where he was, and didn't ask. It also seemed like it took forever to hand me a citiation for not making a complete stop.

I've been riding for nearly 20 years, and that is the only the second ticket I've gotten on a bike. The first was in 1995 for going 63 in a 55 in western Douglas county KS.

So, I recommend making complete stops, at least in Grandview.

I almost went east out of Freedoms lot, and took the back roads to Lee's Summit. Who knows how many stop signs I may have rolled through.

Lesson learned. I sometimes forget I'm not out in the country.

Did they talk much about the automatic clutch?

We did. Basically sounds like the latest version, which cost over $800 or something like that is a much improved design offering relatively flexible adjustments to make the clutch respond the way you like. The talk reiterated to me that the #1 advantage of the Rekluse is that you basically eliminate stalls because the clutch will disengage before you kill the bike. This proved very beneficial on their Dakar competition bikes because many folks were stalling their bikes in the deep desert sands and silt beds while the Rekluse riders were able to keep the bikes moving.

#1 downside (and really one of the only) is the inability to pull start the bike. (I don't know about you all, but I've had to pull start bikes at least a dozen times.)

I'm still not willing to pay the money for one personally. I figure my motivation will be when my left wrist has arthritis making the clutch work painful or difficult. I know one top-notch rider who finally got a Rekluse solely for this reason. His options were get a Rekluse or quit riding. In the meantime, I kind of enjoy the art of clutch work.

I have the motion pro tool kit, as does Troy, and I love mine. Worth every penny!!! You can add to this basic tool kit and personalize it for your bike with minimal added investment.

One tool that wasn't mentioned that I have used countless times, a good headlamp!! I love mine and it lasts a long time. Waterproof, very bright, very small and light. I have even done a fair amount of trail running with the light. It is bright enough for any bike emergency you may have. Just a thought.
