October 26-28: Off-Road at Disney, OK

Post by troy »

 Get the dirtbikes ready (and rock crawlers, Joe)--we are going to do a 3 day weekend at Disney, Oklahoma's 2,500 acres of off-road playground!

Come Fri, Sat, Sun, or all 3--whatever works for you. It's an easy 3.5 hour drive from the KC metro. There is a nice campground with shower house connected to the trails.

DIRECTIONS to Hogan's Campground
http://binged.it/X7Wimt
When you get to Disney, go East over the dam. Take the first paved street on your right (South). The road dead-ends at Hogan's campground, which will be on your right at the end of the street.

FYI: There is a good gas station a little farther to the E in town on the N side of Hwy 28/Main St.

Are you IN?
It would really help if those planning to come would post here or PM me. Let me know if you need a space with RV hookup or just tent space in the RideForum Compound.

I spoke to Hogan. He doesn't have a formal reservation system to speak of, but assures me that if we arrive by Fri morning, we'll be able to secure 4 or 5 RV spaces together. It is important that whoever arrives first works with Hogan to secure space for our group. Given what I know right now, I'd shoot for 5 RV spaces.

Kyle (KC), Mike (safiri), and I (Troy) don't plan to arrive until Fri late morning. I'll hang our RideForum.NET banner in our campground.

I vote for Disney! One reason is that I already have a Chadwick trip planned for October 11-14, but the main reason is that I just read your description in your Disney link and it sounds cool.

I'll probably be in either way since my wife is out of town that weekend and I was looking for something to do anyway. I'll keep an eye on this thread to see where it goes.

I'm always good for Chadwick but that weekend we have a trip planned for Brock Creek. Couple of guys we met in Colorado this summer have a small, WUDI, type ride at Brock that weekend. There are 34 miles of single track all connected together. Apparently, great riding the only negative is the distance.

Agreed on both points. Brock Creek is bad ass but man it seems a lot farther than White Rock.

BTW
I'm going to Chadwick this weekend. How can I not with it forcasted to be 75 and sunny. If anyone is there look me up. I'm on a 09 KTM 300xcw and you can't miss my cousin on a 2010 Gas Gas 300.

Disney might be ok with us, only problem is we need to get our Whiterock fix for the year! If we go along to disney would any of you spoods be willing to pull an enclosed trailer with you>? It has room for five or six bikes plus all the gear you could bring, all snug and dry, but will already have three bikes in it. Reason is, id like to bring my rock crawler too. Whoever towed the trailer would be guaranteed a seat on the rocks!

Rick,

Mark (Curado) and I might be back from Southern Utah by then. I will check with him and see if he wants to do this trip as well. FYI we will be riding in the Grand Staircase Escalante area and up to Captol reef NP and back. Then over to Comb Ridge for ruins and great riding. Are you interested in going? Oct. 15~20 roughly.

We can work something out...I finally have a proper truck for pulling. We can use my trailer or I can put my bike in the back of the truck and just come to you. If Monica goes, I may want to take my Ranger so we might need my 20ft. car hauler. Lots of options but we can hammer out the details closer to ride time.

I'm out if that KC guy is going. I rode with him at Milford and he is a squid! LOL!

Has this ride been narrowed down to where we're going for sure? It looks like maybe Disney is for sure? Just curious as to what the latest is.

At only 2.5 hours from El Dorado Springs, MO, Disney, OK qualifies as a day trip if you want it to. The ride is scheduled for Fri, Sat, & Sun, but a guy could come down for any one of the days, 2 days, or all 3 and have a blast regardless.

If we get enough folks to come join us, maybe you need to cater our ride! I'll take some Rusty Jug BBQ at the end of a trail ride!

It does sound like the interested parties are in favor of Disney. Nobody has chimed up to say, "if it's not Chadwick, I'm out". So let's make it "official". The ride will be at Disney, OK. More details to come. Check the first post for latest info.

Disney it is! I'm assuming that we'll be camping at the campground you mentioned. If so, I'll plan on bringing my camper.

Looking forward to the details.

I'm not a Disney expert, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

OK, so I've been to Disney once. There aint a lot there--not many lodging options. There are some cool looking rock cabins in town, but the report is they suck and they aren't cheap, either. Hogan's off-road camp is pretty nice and he has sites with hookups for campers. The shower/toilet house is decent--better than I expected considering the clientele. It's a very red, white, & blue crowd you might say. Red-neck, white-trash, & blue-collar! YAHOO! He only charges $15/site/night, and I think he's very liberal with how many folks you can pack in a site.

There are some very close, decent dining options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The trails offer woods, hill climbs, water crossings, fast sand/gravel sections, and LOTS of solid rock to crawl around on--a unique motorcycle experience. I did not find any single-track, but it did not stop me from having a blast.

3 days is more than enough time to completely wear myself out on those trails. I figure I'll head down Fri morning--no rush. So I expect to camp Fri & Sat night.

There really won't be many more details to explain. I'm not going to reserve any camping areas, so we'll just do our best to connect as folks arrive. Maybe I can make up a RideForum.NET flag or banner to hang--that would be kick-ass. Unless someone else volunteers to provide a meal for the group, I don't plan to organize meals or anything.

Woohoo!

Is anyone else planning on bringing campers/rv's? I'd be fine with planning on just reserving some spots at Hogan's. Unfortunately, my camper only has two beds in it- I'll be in one and the other would be open at this point. I'll bring my "Stars 'n Bars" flag so we fit in with our potential neighbors if you guys bring the PBR. It sounds like the other guys could tent camp around any campers that our group has and make a Rideforum compound. That would be cool!

Should I bring my trials tire for the rock section? Or would it be best to run knobbies since the rest of the place sounds like knobby terrain?

I too plan on heading down Friday morning. Let's get ourselves a convoy!

Ask safiri about trials tires! He and I rode some slightly muddy, leaf-covered woods trails on Sunday. His trials tires SUCKED. My opinion comes down to this:

There are conditions where a trials tire is superior, but the knobby is still good in those conditions.
There are conditions where a trials tire absolutely sucks, but the knobby is good in those same conditions.

I tend to ride where I frequently run into conditions where the trials tire is not great. Through my own personal trial & error, I'm a knobby tire guy. My opinion goes against the grain of current, popular wisdom.

I ran the Disney rock last month on a set of D606 tires and had EXCELLENT grip. I was glad to have that knobby when we hit the muddy uphill stuff. Recently I've been using whatever cheap knobby I could get without regard to DOT approval. However, I've heard rumors of folks actually having their dualsport tires checked by law enforcement. I've never seen that happen, but I've always been very happy with DOT D606 tires, so I've come back to them.

Oh, and I could be talked into taking that extra bed in the camper---so Alissa is not going on this ride?

Have you used a trials tire at Chadwick, though? I was skeptical myself until I did it and it makes for a pretty big improvement if you are going to be riding mostly rock. It sounds like the percentage of rock at Disney probably isn't enough to justify running the trials, so I'll probably just stick with the knobby. Especially if there is going to be sand/mud involved.

Alissa is going to be in Puerto Rico that weekend for a work deal, so I'm all clear for a trail riding weekend.

Consider the second bed yours if you want it. Actually, I have room on my trailer for your bike too, unless you were planning on hauling down with some other guys. Is your brother coming? I was just kidding about him being a squid at Milford- hope I didn't hurt his feelings!

Like I said, my opinion seems to go against current, popular opinion. I've run a trials tire at Chadwick. I prefer the knobby. Either way you'll have a blast.

It is kind of funny, though, trail motorcycles used to run trial-style tires back in the 70's. Somewhere along the line, the motocross-style knobby took over. Now, in really just the last few years, the trials tire craze is back. 4 years ago, I'd show up and maybe 1 out of 10 bikes would have a trials tire mounted. Now, 9 out of 10. I'm definitely NOT a "the masses can't be wrong" kind of guy!

We'll talk logistics when we get closer. Hopefully a ton of folks can make it--will be a blast.
