LABOR DAY WEEKEND 2-DAY!

Post by troy »

This post will be continuously updated with the current details as they become known.
Image
ALL BIKES of ALL SIZES WELCOME!
This is a no-hassle, low-cost weekend ride opportunity with some great folks in a beautiful part of the Mark Twain forest! 8) Throw the dirt bikes and light dualsports in the truck or trailer and make the trip to Link's Freeman Off-Road Resort this Labor Day weekend! You'll be home Sun night in time to spend Labor Day with the family!

For those wanting some great dualsport adventure on the bigger bikes, you won't find more old logging roads and rugged forest roads than this part of the Mark Twain! Heck, bring your pavement ride if you want--the state highways in this area will not disappoint!

If the singletrack sounds too gnarly, you have the option of riding the 20+ miles of off-road trails in the Sutton Bluff Recreation area just up the road from the Freeman Off-Road Resort. This is an organized trail system with wider ATV trails. (PERMIT REQUIRED for Sutton Bluff system) Note that with a permit, you can even drive ATV's on the local gravel roads to get from Link's place to Sutton Bluff trails. So bring the family and the ATV's if you prefer a slightly tamer family adventure!

http://www.freemanoffroad.com/ If you want a bed in one of the cabins, let us know soon as space is limited! (Beds/bunks for about 15 folks.) Most folks will head down Fri night to be ready to ride about 9AM Sat morning. Some folks that live closer will come down early Sat morning. If you want to get an idea of the drive, you can map your drive to Bunker, MO--that gets you within 15 minutes of Link's place.

The riding will be a mix of narrow singletrack, rugged ATV trails, and abandoned logging roads. Link has a reputation for taking us through some serious creek crossings so bring your snorkels! IMPORTANT TIP: when Link asks, "do you like big hills?", the correct answer is "NO!".

Reply to this thread or PM/call/email Troy if you have questions or want to sign up. (troy at troywolf dotcom) The biggest cost of this trip is the gas to get there and back, so let's carpool--post up to organize. With a borrowed trailer, I have truck & trailer space for 4 bikes & riders.

A couple of past Link's OFF-ROAD rides! AND for the BIG bikes! The adventure (big bike) crowd can simply grab the route file on Link's site and go have a blast! I rode the entire route over 2 days this past Spring and it was excellent. Plenty of hairy sections to keep things interesting.

DIRECTIONS
http://www.freemanoffroad.com/where.html
If you are arriving after dark be sure you carefully write down all the information about how to find the place! It's paved almost all the way with only 1/2 mile of easy gravel road to his place. When on the gravel road, you'll see a large rock on your left and a driveway. The rock says "Link's". When you pull in, the first cabin building is Link's house and the resort office. Next you'll see 2 small cabins on your right and a larger cabin further down. The shower house is a metal building in front of you. We will all be in the big cabin as Link has the 2 small cabins booked with dualsport riders this weekend.

I would say "IN!!!", but we have to be in Seattle that weekend for Alissa's cousin's wedding.

For anyone thinking about going- DO IT! The riding around that area is a lot of fun! I wish I could make it and I would bring both the big bike and the little bike this time to be able to have even more fun.

I'll be looking forward to the ride report after this one.

That sounds like fun however that weekend I will (I hope) be on the last leg of a trip to Yellowstone or around the Great Lakes.

As hard as it will be, try to have fun without me.

Gosh, I haven't really destroyed anything on my bike since easter, I might have to give this one some thought.

New guy is an absolute definite maybe. :) Wife and I talked about heading to the lake that weekend, so instead I need to convince her we need to go visit her family. They live in Salem, MO which is very close to Links. While she has 'family' time, I ride...

5-star accommodations. 5-star dining. Easy gravel roads and well groomed trails.

What's not to like?!?!?

Link's place does not have a kids track per say, but a kid could definitely enjoy riding his/her dirt bike on Link's property--especially when compared to nowhere to ride a dirt bike like in my subdivision. (I know you have a bit of land and a little track for your daughter to play on.) He has a rough gravel road running from his property entrance to the cabins and to the back of his property where his shop is. His property also has a major power line running through it with some "trail" running along it. Some of that "trail" is easy and other parts are near impossible for some riders!

The actual guided ride will not be "kid friendly" at all...unless your kid is an accomplished rider beyond their years. (Think xr-nut's boys who can ride circles around me! One of them actually rescued me by riding my bike up a hill I failed on.)

Now you could take kids to the Sutton Bluff trail system, but I expect those trails in general are too much for young kids unless they are really good riders.

Why not... I'm in if I can hitch a ride or car pool. I got a crew cab truck and can carry four bikes as well if needed.
Been wanting to ride there for years.

COOL, Jim! I was going to email you to make sure you saw this thread. Glad you can make it! I'm adding you to the rider list in 1st post.

My brother, Kyle (kc), is coming from Manhattan, KS. We have room for 2 more that no one else has claimed so far. OR we can haul with you, Jim. Kyle has a very nice enclosed trailer that can haul a lot of bikes and gear and a big diesel truck to pull it that gets great mileage for a big rig like that. If we end up using his trailer, I'll probably bring a spare bike.

Rumor is that Bill Dragoo and a buddy might make the ride, too!

And Ann can't go either.

Please double-check with Ann to see if she can make this ride. If anything changes in her plans, she is welcome to join us--even if it is last minute. Enjoy the riding you will be doing far away from us, Eddie. 8)

In order to help folks organize rides, let us know what bike(s) you plan to bring--especially those not planning to follow Link on the singletrack. Thanks!

I've had a blast down there on both my dirt bike and my adventure bike. More than enough to keep you entertained for a couple days!
