Newbie from KC North

Post by Joe McBride »

Newbie Joe McBride here. I was having trouble getting registered and Troy was kind enough to email me and get me fixed up. Long "The Jerk" life story below.

I have had bikes intermittently since my dad bought me a new 1976 Yamaha GTMXC 80 (I continue to be obsessed with these bikes if you know where one is. I have a 74 Honda CT70 and love those too). I have had a few Yamaha ITs and Kawasaki KDXs and love to ride woods. I am novice to intermediate due to not riding much. I don't have a truck or a trailer, but have friends with them. I bought a 97 DR350 a while back so I could have freedom to ride to off-road riding locations. I had never ridden on the street prior to getting this bike so I am very edgey about it.

Now I need suggestions of places that I can trails, dirt roads or gravel roads in the KC Northland or not too far away. A neighbor gave me some suggestions. Barry Road near the car wash by Green Hills had "no trespassing" signs. The other was good, but not extensive. It is west of Parkville, MO and South of Waldron on FF Highway to River Road just east of I-435 by a water treatment plant and cell tower. The ride out of Parkville was nice. Turn on Bluff Rd. and turn on road into plant and head out on the dirt road. There is the cool old Naylor cemetery (see below) by the cell tower and an old barn.

I do Marketing at KCI Airport and am a classic car enthusiast. Come out to the KCI Cruise http://www.flykci.com/cruise in June. Yes, I know about the Tiffany Springs park trails. I used to ride with a member of the trials club. We (KCMO Aviation Dept) used to own it and now it is Park & Rec. Illegal now.

Again, I am looking for places to ride that are not long hauls. Also, I see there are some Northlanders, so maybe we can ride together.

I look forward to being a part of this forum.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

I did research on the Naylor Cemetery
Cool history. Scroll to Platte County Reville story 3/4 down. One of the Naylors was killed in a fight by a Waldron. The town of Waldron is nearby.

Cool. I had the the same kind of problem. I used to ride out at my friend's place on his equipment in Lees Summit (illegally). Then I kinda "changed my ways," bought my own bike and a truck, and pretty soon I was hitting the legal places more often, almost exclusively now.

I don't have a trailer but I can squeeze 2 bikes in the back of my truck if you ever want to head out to Perry or Deepwater. I figure if you go that far you kinda gotta stay all day though ;)

Has there been any effort at all for a legal public riding area in KC? That's my dream some day, otherwise I'm moving, lol.

Hey Joe, Welcome.

Fellow nothlander here. I just moved to I-29 and 64th. and also riding a DR 350. Look forward to riding with you soon. The River Road from Weston up to Atchison is a nice ride and there are a few trails at an old quary by Atchison. I believe the closest trails to us are at Perry Lake. I definitely want to check this out come spring time that Troy just posted about. http://www.freemanoffroad.com

Take care,

Todd

Welcome, Joe!

Legal off-road riding anywhere close to the metro?! Nothing. Closest legal, public off-road riding that I'm aware of is at Perry Lake. Too far to ride the DR350 unless you want a really long day in the saddle. (I beat the heck out of a 1999 DR350 for a couple of years of hard riding in Arkansas & Colorado.)

Tcarlgren mentions the "River Road". It's one of the best "dualsport" road rides you can do anywhere near the metro. A bit of a long ride to get up there and back from Liberty--but a nice day you'll enjoy. The old quarry up there has a short bit of fun trails. It's technically not legal, but the local quadtards tell me "the owner doesn't care". It's way off the beaten path so the chances of disturbing an annoyed neighbor are about nill.

Like Ajayhawkfan, I too have ridden West of Parkville at that old cemetery and barn. Our own "Hank Moody" here on the forum lives in Thousand Oaks North of there--the trails tie all the way up to his neighborhood. Of course...not legal to ride there, but.... I also see that you and Ajayhawkfan share a love of history. It's neat to learn the history of the interesting things we come across on our rides.

I lived off 68th St near Green Hills Rd for about 5 years. Those trails backed up to my neighborhood and I rode a few times out there. Now it is littered with NO TRESPASSING signs and purple paint (which means no trespassing). I did some research on that land. It is several parcels owned by several REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts). So the land is just sitting there waiting to be cashed in to a developer some day. It's got some high quality trails---too bad you can't ride it. On weekends, I'd hear quads and bikes in there, but I've also seen a police Tahoe pulling a trailer full of KCMO quads heading in there!

The best off-road riding in KS in my opinion is easily School Creek at Milford Lake--a good 2.5 hour haul from Liberty. In about 5 hours, you can reach some of the best riding in the country down in Arkansas. The Mill Creek ATV system is a great place to start...then just keep riding roads and finding more trails---100's of miles of trail and the roads are great, too.

A closer place to ride off road is Cooper Creek ATV area at Truman Lake. http://www.nwk.usace.army.mil/ht/ATVArea.cfm It is closer at about 90 miles from downtown, KC.

This is cool! Freaking Eddie McLiney from my childhood and a lot of good guys! Some good ideas as well as discouraging ones. Troy, I have been trying to figure out what purple paint meant. I also researched that land, (Line Creek Valley) all the way down to I-29 and found the same thing. One large parcel still seems to be with a family that lives there but it looks a bit hostile. With my job at KCI I recently met two KCPD ATV cops and asked them about legal places to ride and they said somewhere near St. Joseph. Any ideas on this? I need to get chummy with them in case they bust me. ;-) Another friend mentioned NE corner of I-435 & Truman. Behind Dean and Lincoln Cemetery. We used to hit the Squirrel Cage along the river east of I-435 but it doesn't look like anything is there anymore.

Eddie, I was at Joey and Liesl's a couple months ago when Jim Vandergrift died. It was a blast from the past. I'll give you a buzz.

I'll do some Internet aerial recon of the Atchison quarry. Hints and help appreciated.

I have nothing to hide and won't p!ss anyone off too much on this board so I will provide my contact info: joe@kc.rr.com or 816-695-8504 (set myself up for more spam). Todd and Curado, let's be in touch. Let's go for a slippery -12 ride later this week!

Thanks Troy, for the site!

Perry Lake OHV area is closer to the metro.

True that Truman Lake also offers a riding area. As I understand, if it has rained at all in recent days, that place is a mud pit--I've never been.

RE: Old quarry trails on River Rd South of Atchison

Our own BadCompany posted this report that features a few photos of those trails.

I mentioned you to Joey and he said you were at the house.

Late summer I was having dinner with Amy at Carriage Club and saw your sister Julia. It was nice seeing her after so many years.

This summer there is a Flint Hills Ride. http://www.backroadstouring.org/kansas/index2.htm Join us. It is a lot of fun. There is a number of KC area riders going, I'm sure you could get a haul.

In places to ride you mentioned St. Joseph earlier I think what you would be looking for is a riding area south of St. Louis St Joe. As far as I know there aren't any riding areas close to St. Joseph. I have not been to St. Joe but would be up for checking it out sometime.

Here's a link I found after a quick search http://www.atvaonline.com/ride/stjoe.asp or

The cops mentioned the trails being near St. Joseph. I will run that lead down. Todd, let's ride to Atchison when there is a break in the weather on our DRs. Please PM your contact info or whatever the protocol is here. Thanks!
