Actually, I have a friend that has a similar setup from the 1970s.
I would use one so long as I took off the chain. No need to wear out the tranny and not sure if the tranny would get lubed with input from the output shaft. The rear wheel bearings are getting spun and the tire getting worn, but the load is a lot less than riding the bike ... no 200 lb man, no torque from the chain/motor, etc.
Edit: I should add that my friend towed his big ol' Kawasaki back and forth to North Dakota from KC at least once using his similar device.

Just seams like a lot of extra wear(without the enjoyment of riding) when you can get the setup that turns the bike sideways and is completely off the ground. Also did you notice this bike is dualsported? That at least means the rear tire is dot'ed but why bother with a plate if its not going to be riden on the street?
ps. I was 2 when the 70's came to an end!

I agree with all you wrote. I was 12.
One big concern for me would be if the rear bearings failed ... you wouldn't know it until way too late.

Kids dang I was 17. And for the cost, I would think a bumper mount style would be much more cost effective.

With a setup like that I would hate to see anything fail !!!
Just imagine Troy with his new "VARNEY" (humming to himself.... I got the coolest bike in the world....) driving home from Illinois with a Jethro Bo-dean spark bomb dragging behind his car.....
