Guy's, I bought a bike out of state, from an individual. Do I have to have the Vin number verified by the state of Missouri to get it tagged and if so, does the Highway Patrol do this?
I know I have to get the mechanical inspection done.

To answer your question, http://dor.mo.gov/mvdl/motorv/titling.htm does not list anything about getting a VIN number check. When they do the mechanical, they will take down the VIN, and as long as it matches the title you should be fine. You can email the MO DOR, they are actually pretty good about getting back within a day or so.

The only time I had to do a VIN number check is when I had a lost title to deal with. I think I also had to do one when the title was misprinted (numbers were transposed). But ya, you would do that at the Highway Patrol or local PD.

Thanks for the link Fatburg. I know Kansas used to charge $10 to have the HP check the vin number on all, out of state titles. This is the first, out of state vehicle that I have purchased since moving to Missouri, so I wasn't sure. It does look like I need to get and fill out the application form. Hope to get it inspected tomorrow and proceed from there.

They will fill out the application when you go in. All you need to take is the following:

1. The signed title with all the signatures and the proper odometer reading. (I took in a copy of my bill of sale from the guy also just in case)
2. Your personal property tax receipt for the past one or two years depending if you are getting 1 or two year tags. If you haven't paid property tax yet, you have to go to the collectors office and get a waiver.
3. Proof of insurance.
4. Current Inspection. (If you use the license bureau in the Petsmart in North Kansas City, you can get your inspection done next door at Jack Miller)
5. And a check or cash for the fees.

They will fill out the application for title and have you check it over.

The seller will have to submit the bill of sale if applicable to his state, but you shouldn't have to worry about that.

The inspection satisfies the DMV for VIN verification. If you are not getting it licensed right away but need the title done, the police have a form they use and gladly come to your home to verify the VIN. I have had them over three times in the past, in Liberty. They came faster than if I had really needed them all three times, like within an hour of calling them.

There is alot of truth to what you said Carl. My kids got pelted with eggs from high schoolers as they were walking on the sidewalk one night. Called the police, and they came by 2 days later because I wrote a nasty email to the mayor and city council. They claimed they were too busy to drop by at 10:00 pm. Now come on, Liberty police have more to worry about than kids being assalted? I found the egg shells in a neighbors yard the next day. The police never did attempt to find the teen hooligans. Said they would patrol that busy road I live on more often. Haven't seen a donut eater on my street in a long time. Anyway, end of rant.
