Tye, this is not entirely true. I showed up at the highway patrol inspection station with all of the DOT required items, a TITLE from Illinois and a PLATE from Illinois and, of course, my insurance binder. The inspector looked at the VIN AND at the sticker on the headrace by the VIN. "It says 'For Closed Course Competition Use Only'. I cannot give you your inspection sticker since this vehicle (a KTM 625 SXC) is illegal to operate on public highways as per the Federal government." The sticker must be one that has the approval number on it for the manufacturer's model. This is how they look at "dirt bikes" in NE Kansas.

If your 400 EXC has not been previously titled so that it is new you can just walk into the courthouse with paperwork and get a tag. If it is used, but titled in Kansas you can get the Highway Patrol to give you an inspection approval because they will only run the VIN and not even (usually) look at the bike. All other bikes are inspected and if the headrace sticker isn't a DOT sticker you will not get approval from the HiPo to operate it on Kansas streets.

Hmmm...first time I've heard of this. It has a North Carolina title, just got it about 3 weeks ago, of course it didn't need an inspection because that's where it came from.
When I called the inspection office here, and asked them what happens during the inspection, all I was told was they check the vin to see if it's stolen. No warning about the competition use only thing.
I know of others around here who have titled and tagged their KTM's. I'm hoping it's not a concern.
Thanks for the heads up.

I finally got approval from the head highway patrol officer (who happens to be in Wichita) but that was very difficult. I decided in the future I would go to a dealer, copy down the information and go home and photoshop me a new sticker and glue it on for the inspection....

Good idea on the sticker. I was trying to think of the same thing.
