Heading out July 24th with iYeager (if he has a bike  ) and riding at least 80% gravel/back roads all the way into Colorado. We will leave at 6-7am and slab it to around Eureka. I am on a DL1000 and iYeager is getting a 08 KLR.

My question to the forum: If you were riding/have riden accross Kansas what are some areas you would want to see or see again? Keep in mind we will stay on the lower half of the state.

Thanks.

On a path from Eureka, KS to Sipapu, NM, you could hit the Gypsum Hills near Medicine Lodge, KS and ride the open range of Ted Turner's huge buffalo ranch.

In 2006, I enjoyed a ride with the Backroads Touring boys through the area. Here is their ride report from that trip:

I do recommend Buster's in Sun City for a lunch stop if it fits for you. There is NOTHING else in the "town".

Btw, you boys are going to be HOT in late July! Bring lots of water. 8)

If you head straight South from Eureka, you could ride through the huge windmill farm just South of Beaumont, KS. The Beaumont hotel (with it's grass landing strip and planes parked outside) is a landmark. The food ain't worth any praise really, but the place is interesting.

From there, you can head West mostly along the 160 route all the way to Medicine Lodge where you can route through the buffalo in the Gyp Hills.

I have ridden most of the state via Bicycle Across KS (pavement). The Gyp (Gypsum) Hills area is one of my favorites from my travels in/out of the state.

Don't forget the map resources KDOT has:

Have a great ride.
