Pull up a couch. It's cool in the Lounge. Just remember to be a good neighbor.

Rally initiation/ rally School Manhattan, August 26th and 27th

Post by gagnaou »

You probably have all heard about the Dakar rally or other races to remote places. You actually do not have to go that far to have a lot of fun!

This was in Wyoming a couple of years ago

In the past few years, I have talked about it and had some interest in doing more. So here is your chance, we'll spend a couple of days learning about rallying and practice navigation skills and above all do some riding and have some fun!

I will post more details as they are getting finalized

Cool! I wanted to do this after you gave your presentation. I hope I am free that weekend. My daughter decided to go to KSU, but I don't remember which weekend is move-in. Can I get by with a simple (cheap) manual roll chart holder?

Yes that will be fine, ideally you'll have also a GPS for cap heading but more critically will be a way for you recalibrate your odometer to the right mileage as you are bound to get off here and there. Rally blitz has an app that works pretty good for that if you have an old iphone.

On the plus side move-in would have been the previous weekend so perfect for you to come by again and see how was the first week!

Here is your chance to learn and experience what it is all about. If you have the equipment, great! If you do not you can probably hook up behind somebody and have a great time riding!

- Saturday, we will meet at the ORV area north of Manhattan for a quick review of rally navigation principles and we will put those skills in practice in the park during the rest of the day.
- Sunday, we will go on a practice loop through the flint hills of Kansas.

As far as equipment, different options, obviously the rally stuff would be the best but if you want to test out first, there is the $20 enduro roll chart like http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/67 ... eet-holder and you can use your bike ODO or rally blitz on your iphone.

If you have an ipad mini with GPS capabilities, it can actually do both...

Pre rode the sunday route. Looks like I need to cut out the most fun section, way too overgrown and drift woods and rocks hidden in the vegetation. Those 3 miles probably took us a good 30 min to an hour ;-)

FWIW not much left of those roads, Christenson Hill, 6800 and Mariadahl Rd, those were a lot of fun still a couple years ago...Hopefully next burning season will clear them up.

We are less than 2 weeks out folks, this should be fun! PM me so that I can send you the roadbooks or the GPS tracks if you want to make a dual sport ride out of it once the rally students have figured out the way.

It was a good time, hopefully everybody enjoyed it!

Pretty dusty the first day with some planned weed whacking

and some unplanned

Today we let the storm go through and conditions thereafter were perfect with no dust!

Yes. Started as a CBR500R that was wrecked. About 1.5" to 2" more travel and a 19" front wheel (plus a lot more custom work). Kind of similar to the CB500X with the RR kit, but cheaper and with cast wheels.

Thanks for setting this up Luc. We saw some really neat places and fun roads. :D

If any of you get a chance to take part in this in the future, DO IT. Three of of us had Adv type bikes (the others were a KLR and a KTM 500) and had a great time. If it gets too tough, there are ride-arounds.
