I want to learn to ride single track?

Post by slimtrader »

Hi guys,

How would I start riding what you might call, "single tracks"?

I hid some money from my ol'lady and finally got a dirt bike. Young kid sold me his CR250. It's bent up a bit from crashing it on the motocross track but he says it's still good for the woods. I can almost start it and almost touch the ground when I sit on it. It sure does smoke a lot..... Is that normal? Well, I like to watch off road riding videos and since I'm green I just parked the bike on a milk crate in my garage and put the big screen TV in front of me and watch Erzberg Rodeo hare scrambles by Red Bull while I straddle my ride. I think after watching I'm already a better rider. I also got a used helmet. Good deal, for $60 I got one that is only slightly cracked. I am thinking that my high top basketball shoes will be good for starters but I'll have to tape up the laces so they don't get caught on the pegs. That happened in my garage while watching the Erzberg Rodeo and I tipped over and spilled my beer while trying to clear the logs obstacle.

Anyway, you guys seem nice and the other sites usually just kick me off after a while. There must be lots of pricks in the riding community or maybe they are just jealous of my nice bike?

Hilarious!
A kid here in town and a guy I've ridden with from NE have CR's with some woods friendly mods. I guess if it were mine I would try to bring the bottom end up and bring down the violent hit when the powervalve opens. Flywheel weight and gnarly pipe to start with. Just my opinion.

hey Troy,

Yep it's me. Sorry it's been so long since I've made contact. The last 2 years have been busy for me. I bought a locksmith business and have been busting my ass making it as successful as possible. I only got out to ride in the woods once last fall. Every time I ride I wonder why I don't make it a point to go more often.

We have nice riding areas up here and it's great to be able to ride with my brothers and their friends. I have 3 brothers and they are all younger and faster than I am. We ride in Akley, MN and camp in the state forest when we go. We even started something we call, "the redneck triathlon" It started out with 8 competitors the first year with a 2 mile run, 10 mile dirt bike ride and finishing with drinking 6 PRR's. I won the first year only because I was the fastest runner and since then they have lowered the running distance each year to the point now where it's pretty much a motorcycle race with beer chugging at the end.

I got rid of the dual sports and I do have a CR250. I got it from a guy that raced woods and it's all set up for woods with a heavier flywheel and lots of other mods so it really works great for me. It's inexpensive to own and maintain and works nice since I don't ride often. I do miss the engine braking you get from a 4 stroke and sometimes the power isn't as predictable but is sure is nimble. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, I did break my wrist riding when I first moved up here 7 years ago. I got a little cocky and fast on a 4 wheeler trail and got airborne after hitting a small log and landed sideways. That put me into a tree. Had a cast for 2 months but I cut it off early myself so I could do the redneck triathlon that year.

Miss riding with you guys and going to the beautiful Ozarks. My youngest brother did ride with a few of you guys a couple of years ago down there. He enjoyed it.
