Ride report Colorado 2015

For anyone interested, here is a ride report from our annual Colorado trip. Sorry in advance for the few typos:

I think it is now working!

Link is good now, Thanks!
Although, I must have had this trip confused with something else.. Sorry..

Looks like it was a great time.. Super views and really good looking trails. Would one have been able to do this ride with a non-plated bike?

Great pics and ride report, Randy.

It was my first time riding in Colorado, and I was glad to be with a group that knew the area so well. The weather, scenery, trails, food, and riding buddies were all tremendous!

I don't yet have a ride report to go with them, but here are my pics from the trip. Let me know if you have trouble viewing them, as I can't quite figure out Google Photo's "permissions" mechanism.

Note that my pic#46 was taken at the same spot as Randy's pic#15, but from different angle. And Randy's picture wasn't photo-bombed by a hummingbird!

Kramer has mellowed with allowing me to pause long enough to take pics. Now he needs to mellow with the kind of trails he likes riding!

Looks like I missed a good ride! Maybe I'll be able to join you guys next year- it's starting to look like this might be the second year in a row I don't get to do a summer Colorado trip. :(

I forgot to mention- I liked your comment about the MTB trails in KC. I've found that I feel mostly the same way. I've ridden MTB in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Texas, and South Dakota and the trails in the KC metro and surrounding areas are really good trails. Maybe its just because I started out riding in KC or that the way the trails are laid out is what I'm used to, but it seems that a lot of the IMBA Epic trail systems cater toward downhill riders that have a shuttle or ski lift that takes them back to the truck. I like riding downhill as much as the next guy, but it takes the fun out of it when you have to turn around and ride straight back uphill to get back to the trailhead. I guess I like the variety of a trail system that is laid out to be a little of everything- a mix of uphill/downhill, smooth, rough, easy, technical, rocks, dirt, etc.

Alissa and I are finally acclimating to the trails here in AR. Some of the uphills I used to dread I now don't even think about! I told Alissa we are getting "Arkified".

I thought I read somewhere that you were headed out in September? We visited your guest cottage. Thought I had a picture but couldn't find it. Why were you going up a dead end road when it was snowing?

I was thinking the exact same thing about why I like KC trails the best....that I'm just used to them. I do like the Arkansas trails...at least Blowing and Mt. Kessler. A local from Arkansas was telling me the best trail is called, Hobbs....ever heard of it? In or near Fayettville. My hope is to get down there for a couple days sometime this Fall for MB riding.

Headed to Shawnee Mission Park early tomorrow morning!

The group I normally go with is heading out to Salida in a few weeks. I'm still holding it open as a possibility, but I'll probably pass to save money.

As for the dead end question- I think the best answer is PANIC! I think we were in freak out mode and our leader thought he was on a different road than the Alpine Tunnel dead end. It was one mistake in a long string of mistakes that day, but it was a good learning experience.

I definitely think being used to a certain type of trail system has something to do with it. Now that we're getting used to riding in AR every time we ride, we are getting more and more used to it. Leatherwood is our home trail system and we've finally figured out a good sequence of trails/direction to ride them to make some good loops.

It's funny to hear about what different people consider the best trails for an area. Hobbs is an alright place to ride, but the trails are all smooth "pea gravel" and there is absolutely nothing technical out there- barely a rock or log to hop in the whole place!

Let me know when you come down for some MB riding- my schedule is pretty open and I'm always up for some riding.
