Maier Handguards

Anybody have these. I put them on last night. It appears there is an issue with the front break lever. The cantilever part of the brake handle interferes with the aluminum handguard. Carl, don't you have these, how is yours installed. The only thing I can figure out is I would have to bend them or not line up the break lever with the aluminum handguard.

move your lever mount more inboard.

Haven't taken it out yet to see how much it will actually limit my front break. Already had to ride it home in a downpour after work tonite, so didn't want to get soggy again. The more I move it inboard, the closer it gets to the narrow area of the handguard.

I've had bad luck with handguards. On my DR350, they never seem to fit right. I had to remove the crossbar on my handlebar to make mine fit. The clutch lever hits the handguard too--which I don't like. I know a lot of people have to cut the ball of the end of their levers to fit inside their handguards.

I finally got fed up and went with this expensive option from ProMoto Billet.

I can't actually vouch for them yet...they arrived today and are still boxed. Hopefully I'll get them installed this week. I have to install new bars as mine are bent.

UPDATE: The F.I.T. system did NOT fit! I ended up sending the expensive system back. See the reply below for what I did instead.

I think I would be sleeping in my truck if I were to spend $180 on handguards. Oh well, I'll eventually find out how to deal with it, only problem is I've already stripped out the head of one of the bolts that goes into the end of the handlebar.

Can you bring it over Friday night or this weekend sometime? What brand did you buy? I bought the Tusk units with the bigger opening for ATVs I think. They fit with no bending or interference and no lever modifications! You can buy the replacement bolts and end of bar pieces too. Check out Rocky Mountain ATV. Let me know if I can help. If we can't fix it in the garage we can sell it on the driveway! That's what I always do!!!!!!

They are Maier. I may stop by sometime when your around this weekend and see if you can see something that I'm missing. They may just need to be adjusted some to make the break lever work correctly.

I had the Maier handguards on my 06 KLR and had the same problem. I moved the brake lever in and bent and twisted until I was pulling my hair out. I finally bought some Acerbis Rally Pros and they worked out for me. Maier does make an ATV version that are a little different shape at the end of the handlebar, they look like they would work better. Good luck.

I got a torch and a welder bring it over! I seen you ridering in the rain the other night. wow it was downpouring a few times with rain inbetween.
One option might be to get a longer bolt were the brusguard bolts to the bar clamp and use some washers to space it away from the bars allowing more room between the two. It doesnt take many washers to make enough space. Like I said stop by anytime, we can always brake out the torch!

Yeah, probably wasn't the smartest thing I ever did by riding into work yesterday knowing it was gonna rain in the afternoon, but is was definately a learning experience. I'm probably gonna mess with it a little tonite, if I can't figure it out I may stop by.

I am riding in the rain on purpose and loving it. Adds to the "adventure".

With a little RainX on the visor it wasn't too bad. Only ran into one instance that scared the crap out of me. Hit a water puddle on 291 that completely took my foot off the pegs. Other than that it was quite fun watching facial expressions of people in cars at stop lights. Rain suit kept me, for the most part, dry. Boots look like they have been shined and bike looks like it has been washed.

Got it fixed for a little over $1. Went to Lowe's and bought a pack of 5 stainless steel washers, used them all, and worked like a charm. Thanks for all the suggestions and even the use of a torch if needed.

First, I found handguards I'm very happy with. The new "Evolution" from Enduro Engineering--I talk about it here:
http://www.rideforum.net/viewtopic.php?t=308

Instead of the expensive F.I.T. system (see previous post above), I opted for a rather inexpensive Fat bar and some fat bar adapters. This solution worked GREAT because the adapters raise the bars about .75 to 1 inch. I wanted to raise the bars anyway so I can stand easier. I also went with a high-bend bar to get even more height. This extra height allowed me to rotate the bars forward a bit, which gives me more room in the saddle to stretch my arms forward.

So now I can stand comfortably and sit more comfortably. The bars look and feel great, in my opinion.

Thanks to a tip from our own jsherm01, I purchased these items from http://www.motosport.com
