I have the SW Motec on my 07. I have no complaints. It has more than paid for itself. I can change the oil without removing it, however it think its easier to remove it. I think only the front two bolts have to be removed and it will swing out of the way. But it's only four bits to remove it completely. I considered the forward foot pegs at first, but after riding the DL I realized that wasn't necessary for me. I had them on my klr but the riding position on the DL didn't work for me. I've seen it done though. It may be worth checking out the stromtrooper or VSRI site for lots of specific info.

I second Rycomm's endorsement of the SW Motech skid plate. If I had one complaint on it, and this is probably true for any skid plate, is that the mounting bracket and the bolts there of, at least on mine, are exposed (the bolts) and if you happen to hit something you shouldn't, right on the bolt, something has to give and that is usually the rear bracket of the skid plate and it bends to an awkward shape making re-attachment (if you have taken it off to change the oil) a bit troublesome unless you have a pretty chunky vice to bend it back in shape.
But, changing the oil is easy. As Rycomm suggested, almost easier to just take it off and change the oil.

I have the SW Motech also. I have pretzeled the bracket twice beyond repair.
The V-Strom lacks ground clearance, you lessen it with a skid plate and you lessen it some more with exposed hex heads.
Consider Touratech, I wish I had.

I might buy the Touratech just for the parts being included to re-position the oil-cooler. Plus, it looks pretty sweet and tucked in much tighter to the bike.

I have the motech and the highway bars. I love the setup. I can't give much of a testimony to off road capabilities as my vstrom is 99% road use but it saw 15k last year and I love the highway bars just to change the seating position and move my legs a bit. I remove just the rear bolts and loosen the front to allow it to hang down when I do an oil change. It would be easier to just remove the thing and get it out of the way though.
