And the catch 22 is that the only way to ride sand is to go really fast so you plane out on top.....but then if you do wreck at that speed, you are screwed.

So I opt for the slow, legs-flailing, struggle the whole way approach.

If he lowered his tire pressure to 12 PSI instead of 13 he would have made it through.

I'd laugh if I weren't so busy cringing! That has to suck! I wonder if the fact that he had no idea it was coming made it better or worse?

Rule of thumb................. If there is a spot out in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of HD video cameras set up, something may be about to get interesting.

He is a professional rider with big kahunas. His buddies were parallel to him in the trophy truck filming the stunt. I studied the footage paying close attention to body language and timing of suspension compression and such. Look at how early he lifts his feet completely up off the pegs and tucks close to the bars for the roll. He appears relaxed throughout the entire planned process. Looks like something I would do. Hey Safiri, remember that 3rd gear get-off and roll on the powerline trail in Arkansas...Yeah, that was Awesome.

..and you are right, KC. It does seem like the guy's legs come up to prepare for that crash way too soon. It does seem planned.

It's crappy old video with my head down in the sand the whole time, but it brings back such wonderful memories.

Yes, I do remember. I thought I was going to be picking up pieces for the surgeon to reattach. Your ninja skills saved the day and were amazing to watch. And I was able to avoid the carnage that unfolded in front of me while shutting it down.

The sand in the video looks to be very fine. Note how the bike sinks into it as it falls over after the dismount. Not to mention the front wheel sinking to start with. In the movie "Dust to Glory" they talk about the silt beds, and show footage of a moto rider pulling out one of the all-time saves as his moto starts to do what happens in this video. The method of the save was hidden by the cloud of silt, but the rider somehow hung on and must have squeezed his knees together real tight.

As to Sand Dunes, I almost became a hood ornament on a Jeep. Only way to ride is fast, and that has its own risks. GSDNP is where I learned to enjoy sand, on a loaded down LC4. Medano Pass is good times: Rainbow Trail single track to get to the pass road; tight, smooth, steep switchbacks up the east side; lots of deep stream crossings coming down the west side; ending in several miles of deep sand that skirt the dunes and lead to the visitor center.

I should come clean about my first reply. I was totally BS ing the thought of it being staged did cross my mind but I think not. he has all his weight forward of the pegs to start with, the ensuing calamity speaks for itself.

I did Fresno Canyon in Big Bend Ranch State Park in December. 8 miles of sandy hell...I hated it. Cranked up the DRZ and just let it bob around under me. I only ate sand once but that was more than enough.
