TAR Fall Ride Oct. 22-25

Post by allkidd »

Update 10/21

I'm not sure if it will affect what bike/bikes you bring, but considering the forecast for Saturday, I'm thinking of riding forest roads rather than Brock. Brock is more difficult when raining.

The house cost is a little lower than I expected. I've paid $435 total for the 3 days so each individuals cost will be $435 divided by the number who show up. Cheaper than camping at the National Park!

UPDATE 10/18

Sounds like most of us won't get there until later Thursday afternoon or even into the evening. I'm not sure what time I will get there on Thursday but if I get there early enough, I will just explore some of the trails close to the house. Anybody is welcome to ride with me.

Friday I'm planning on riding the attached loop. This is approximately a 100 mile loop. We will stop for gas once but there won't be any food stops as there aren't any restaurants nearby. If you plan on riding this track Friday, make sure to bring plenty of food and water. Anybody who would like is welcome to ride with us on Friday but keep in mind it is totally volunteer as anybody is welcome to ride wherever they wish.

We need to start by 8:30 because this loop, and any possible problems, make for a full day. So, I plan on leaving the house by 8:30. If you would like to ride this loop, plan on being full of gas and all loaded, gear on and ready to leave at 8:30.

Several of you have indicated a desire to ride Brock Creek on Saturday. We can talk about it when we get to the house but that is what I will tentatively plan on doing.

The house has a full kitchen so if you would like, you can cook your dinner at the house. My plan is to eat breakfast at the house, pack a lunch for on the bike and go out for dinner at Russellville. From the house, Russellville is only about 10 minutes.

I will continue to post updates as we get more of the logistics figured out.

Also, I would like to have everybody's phone number. Looking at my contacts it appears that I'm missing Bronco Steves, Scott (Steve's cousin) and lynn. You guys might PM me your phone number. I think those are the only numbers I'm missing but if you think that I don't have your please PM.

Update 10/14/2015

Probably a good time to start talking about ride logiistics. Like Ryan did, you might post your current ride situation. Include who you are riding with, any room you may have and where in town you are leaving from. I will try to keep a summary in this posting.

For one of the full days, either Friday or Saturday, how many of you would be interested in trucking/trailering, to the Brock Creek riding area? It is about a 45 minute drive in a vehicle. Brock has the only legal single track in the midwest. Most of it is not that difficult.

http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOC ... 042765.pdf

For anybody who wants to follow on the other full day, we are working on finalizing the tracks for an approximate 120 mile loop. We will have one stop for gas. This will make for a full day. As we finalize the tracks I will post them.

Ryan open for 2 more leaving from Shawnee? Loading in Grain Valley Wednesday
Nic and Maybe brother possibly room for one leaving from Leavenworth Thursday afternoon.
Ryno and Andy(creekside) riding together and full plan on getting there around noon.
James and Scott riding together and full
Lynn Driving himself straight from Hutch?

House is Full

I've rented a house on 200 acres, 5 miles from Dover and just a couple miles from the Ozark National Forest. This will be the most convenient place for riding access that we've ever stayed at. The Eastern side of the Ozark National Forest doesn't get ridden as much so there are more unspoiled, great trails.

More good news is that I got the house for 3 nights at a total cost of only $435. I know most of you can make the simple calculations, but if we have 6 of us in the house it computes to $72 each for all 3 nights. Obviously, it is less the more that stay there. There are only 5 beds but the house is 2,000 square feet so plenty of space for Aerobeds. Regardless of the numbers, I will probably sleep on my Aerobed so that leaves 5 beds and lots of floor space.

If you prefer to camp, it is free. The owner said there are 200 acres and anybody with our group can camp for free.

I have the house for 3 nights but some of you may not be able to make all 3 nights. Thats okay, come for whatever nights work.

My thought is to limit the house to the first 8 that commit. Of course, unlimited camping. Please reply to this posting your plans for the Fall TAR so I can keep an updated list. Indicate how many nights and whether you are camping or want a slot in the house.

The house has 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, full kitchen, large deck and something called a, "green egg", grill? The VBRO link is below:

Looks awesome, Randy! It's two weeks after the Rally @ the Rock that I'm helping organize, but I should be able to make it. I'll probably plan on roughing it in my camper, so don't worry about a bed for me.

Let me know if you come down earlier for any scouting rides. I'd like to explore around that area!

Great, glad it looks like it will work for you. Should be great for camping.

I have an old track from Dover to Brock Creek that I would like to scout out. There is one place on the track that is now private property that would require a work around, otherwise it is a fun track. I don't know when, but my hope is to get down there some time to check out routes. I guess that you are typically open during the week?

If Kramer is off the weekend of your Rally, we plan on coming down. Think he gets his October schedule in a couple weeks. Will there be any single track guides?

Sounds good to me. During the week would be great for me- it seems like the weekends for this fall are getting booked up pretty quickly, but I'm wide open Monday-Thursday most of the time.

It would be great to have you guys at the RR rally. It's looking like we are working our way towards having a decent turnout, but I'd still like to have as many people show up as possible. The more we get, the more the club can justify having events like this for more riding opportunities for everyone, not just club members. I hope you guys can make it! John is planning on leading a group on single track. I and a few other club members will be leading DS rides on everything from ATV-type trails to forest roads, gravel, etc and we'll also have a guided big-bike friendly ride too. It should be fun for everyone.

I am working on getting a smaller street legal bike purchased. I was thinking about risking taking the KTM, but figured that would be a bad idea since it isn't tagged. I hope to meet some of you Tuesday at the TARKC gathering, and if I'm able to secure the bike I would love to tag along if that would be possible. I can pretty much sleep anywhere, including my truck if necessary. I am willing to pitch in on whatever is needed as well.

I will commit for 3 days if there is a house spot left, as I don't have camping gear.

I'm planning on making this trip. If there's room left in the house, I'll take a spot. If not, I'll camp. Is there restroom / shower access for those that camp?

Thanks, Ryan

I am prepping a DR650 for the Arkansas trip, but can't find a DOT front tire that I like. If I lever on my old standby Michelin m12, what type of speeds do you think we will hit on the slab? Fast enough to blister a non-DOT? I would rather be careful on the street, and be happier on the trail, but I am a rookie on this ride, so looking for the veterans to weigh in. Thoughts?

Our goal is always to ride as little pavement as possible. For the most part, the only pavement we ride is to get from the motel to the forest. With us staying in the forest on this trip, I would expect riding on pavement to be minimal.

I would go with the tire you most prefer for the trail.

Throw on a D606 front and back. Hard to find a better DOT legal tire that offers great offroad ability with great wear on pavement.

I'll chime in. The best combo I've found is a D606 rear and an MT21 front.

Thanks for all the replies fellas! I think I am going strictly dirt for now, but will do Pirelli / Dunlop combo 4 DS. I love the 606 on the rear, but didn't love it on the front. Going to try the M21 on the front and see how it works.
