October ride

UPDATED Wed 10/03. This 1st post will always be updated to include the current, important information you need to know regarding this ride.

PLAN

Oct 5 - 7, Fri - Sun
3 Day Dualsport with some trails included. The route will be appropriate for street-legal dirtbikes. Larger dualsport and ADV bikes are probably not a good idea unless you have very large cahones. That said, if you ride a KLR650 or smaller and feel your skills are not up to par, please don't shy away from this ride. We'll get you through the obstacles--you need to challenge yourself to get to the next level!

You should expect up to 75 miles between gas. We'll be able to transfer gas from larger tanks to those that need it.

Kickstands up in Fayetteville, AR at 10am. Ted Courdin (tcourdin on AdvRider) has graciously allowed us to park our rigs at his home on 5 acres just East of Fayetteville. I will PM the exact address to those that are IN. Feel free to PM me to ask for it if I miss you.

Some of us plan to haul down very early Fri morning. Others may want to haul down Thur night. (It's about 4 hours or less to reach Fayetteville from the KC metro.)

Friday
We'll ride forest roads and throw in some trail sections as we make our way down to Ozark, AR. Along the way, we may hit highlights such as the White Rock overlook, Shores Lake, Bee Rock, etc. Trail sections may include parts of the Mill Creek ATV system Blue Loop or perhaps a run through Frog Bayou to see the falls.

Friday's route is about 67 miles to late lunch and gas. After lunch, we have about 72 miles to Ozark, AR. It's an aggressive route considering the late start (10 AM). We'll always be able to call it quits and buzz down to Ozark a more direct route.

When we reach Ozark, we'll check into the Oxford Inn motel and get some dinner--perhaps at Rivertowne BBQ?
RESERVE YOUR ROOM TODAY

Saturday
After breakfast, we'll ride about 36 miles of road down to the Mount Magazine area--the highest point in Arkansas. This area features the Huckleberry Horse trails, which are multi-use trails that offer plenty of challenge. We plan to ride up to the lodge on top of the mountain for lunch & gas. When we get tired, we'll ride up to Clarksville for motel and dinner. (It's about 20 miles from the trail system to Clarksville.)

Sunday
We'll make our way back to Fayetteville enjoying some great twisty pavement, rugged forest roads, and some of the most scenic ATV trail Arkansas has to offer. It will most likely be mid-afternoon before we reach the trucks & trailers. Or it could be later if we run into issues or simply play too long on the trails. The earliest we might reach Fayetteville is 2pm, but it could be as late as 5pm.

Misc
We'll attempt to coordinate somewhat to minimize the amount of gear we carry on the trail. We won't need a dozen tubes, a dozen sets of tire irons, etc. As for evening clothes, I (Troy) will bring very minimal. You know, dinner jacket, tie, my dress shoes, a variety of hats to fit my moods...necessities like that.

Routes are complete and attached to this post. Even at our furthest point, we'll never be more than 2 hours of pavement from the trucks--making it easy for folks to bail if necessary.

Riders we know are IN:

Code: Select all

allkidd (Randy)
bonanza (Steve)
ozarksrider (Chris)
foster (Nick)
kendall_smith

jasbaum (James)
shb1129 (Scott)
Brothers James & Scott may not meet up with us until Fri night in Ozark.

The attached GPX file contains both tracks and routes for all 3 days. (Some folks prefer tracks and some prefer routes.) The tracks are broken up in order to keep each under 250 points to ensure compatibility with most GSP units. Also included are many handy waypoints.

For Sat, all you'll see is a 36 mile route down to the Huckleberry Horse (multi-use) trail system and a 19 mile route up to Clarksville. The large part of Sat will be playing in the marked trail system and gas/lunch up on top of Mt Magazine.

This sounds like a good topic of discussion for the TARKC meeting tomorrow! :D

I'll have to check my calendar, but hopefully I can go on this one. I wasn't going to be able to make the original date that was set and was pretty bummed about it, but now I might be able to make one of these.

I can't take all this waffling around. I'M OUT!

8) Just kidding. Oct 5 - 7 works better for me simply because it gives me a weekend with family before this ride:

We need to figure this out quickly so folks can schedule their Friday off work.

We should probably nail down some specifics--we can talk at the meeting tomorrow evening of course. A lot of folks tend to be nervous about coming on a ride unless they really know what to expect, times to be where, lodging, etc.

From talking to Randy, seems he wants a multi-day dualsport ride that includes lots of gnarly off-road trail. This might be a lot to chew for some folks. The plan is to hit motels along the ride, so we don't need to carry tents and sleeping bags and such. We should be able to pack small on the bikes. Basically, I figure my normal trail kit plus a small bag of clothing for the evenings and sleeping: a pair of underwear, a pair of shorts/swimsuit, a t-shirt, and flip-flops. I don't actually have any bag setup to allow me to carry even an overnight set of clothes--so I need to get something rigged up. I know what I want--Giant Loop MoJavi Saddlebag.

If there is REAL INTEREST I propose we plan a couple of routes that meet up in the evenings. One route would be what most folks consider "dualsport" and consist of forest roads and short sections of great twisty pavement. Maybe a not-so-gnarly logging road here and there. It would be KLR650, Vstrom, F800GS, 1200, 990 compatible. The other route would include as much trail as possible for those wanting to go deeper. The route would be appropriate for street-legal dirtbikes. My thought is that lots of folks only have one bike--either a trail machine or bigger dualsport/adventure machine. Having 2 routes would accomodate most every rider. IF there was REAL INTEREST, we can even create a 3rd, all pavement route--it's fantastic highway riding down there. All routes could meet at same destination for dinner and motel where we tell BS stories about the day.

How will we know if there is REAL INTEREST? It's simple--you have to post here in this thread.

I think that I am in for sure. I won't know until I get a finalized date and check the calendar at work. I think I am free either weekend. If we do the first one though then my wife is out of town anyway and all I'll have to is coerce my brother to watch my dogs. My brother really wants to come but work won't let him off or some such excuse. Feel free to give him endless amounts of grief tomorrow at the meeting in an attempt to convince him to tell work to stick it.

Lets plan on finalizing the date tomorrow.

Part of the fun of a ride like this is not carrying a lot of luggage. For rides like this in the past I've purchased a cargo net bungee (not sure if that is the exact right name) at Wal-mart then put my few belongings in a plastic bag and secure them on my back fender with the net bungee. I've got a tool bag on the front and then just have to figure out how to carry food, water, tube and tire iron. We don't all need to carry tool, tubes and tire irons so we can figure out what everybody has so we don't have duplicate efforts.

+1!!!!! I say we splitting it up among us is a great idea. It can be a fair amount of weight to carry and it is stupid for everyone in the group to carry one of everything. Don't get me wrong, I love to be prepared but their is prepared and then there is everyone in the group carrying a tube and tire irons and every other tool they can cram in a camelbak. We can plan ahead who is going to carry what even and just double check once we get down there to be certain it didn't get left on a tool bench somewhere. My brother and I carry packs and I think I have him convinced to come. I am happy to carry a full tool kit and even an extra bit of water or food (snacks).

Also, anyone who needs to install tires and doesn't have the time or wants to save a few bucks and not do it themselves. I got a new tire machine and I would be happy to throw tires on for you. Bring your tire and wheel to me and I will get it done in an evening. I am in Leavenworth, KS. Offer stands for those going on the ride this October. I'll do them free for the group going to Arkansas this time. 20$ after that for dual sport, street tires, or dirt bike per tire. Mount and static balance. I know most of you are probably doing your own but the offer stands. Not a mark on the rims I have done so far.

Hope you didn't skip it on my account :D I was watching my 4 y/o little girl last night and she was more interested in going to the swimming pool than going and listening to some adults talk about motorcycles.

I skip a lot of things for my 5 year old girl. She's wound around my heart pretty tight.

The meeting was good with 11 or 12 folks at the meeting. We solidified a plan for the Oct ride which will be updated here in the 1st post soon. The official dates are Oct 5 -7. (Sorry to the folks who can't make it that weekend. :( )

The more I think (and read) about this ride, the more I want to find a way to make it. Sounds like a great ride!

My biggest hurdle is that I am on pager that week. I'm pinging some co-workers about the possibility of covering the weekend for me.

I'm also not scheduled to get back from San Diego until Friday evening, so unless I can change that (unlikely), I'd have to meet you guys in Ozark, MO on Saturday morning. The good news is that Ozark is 30 minutes closer than Fayetteville.

Then the only problem is getting my DR-Z down there. Troy mentioned last night that he might have room for some bikes, so I was thinking I could get my bike to him Thursday night so he could haul it down for me. But that puts my bike in Fayetteville, not Ozark.

I'm going to have to seriously consider putting a hitch on the new car!

Wrong. I assume you used Google Maps. It's very strange, but Google Maps chooses Ozark, MO when you enter Ozark, AR. Ozark, AR is all the way down just S of Highway 40 W of Clarksville.

Bing Maps gets it correct.

Your schedule sounds complicated to make this work...but, if I can help by hauling your bike and gear, just let me know. Maybe you can change your return flight to be San Diego to Bentonville, AR -- which is just a short drive N of Fayetteville. Cab down to Fayetteville where you get your gear and bike and ride down to Ozark. It's just over an hour of scenic pavement down to Ozark on a DRZ400....I would not do it in the dark.

I rode mill creek last year a blast, I live 2.5 hours from Fayetteville, I have the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet Saturday night, might go down Thursday night and come back Saturday afternoon. How much riding is going on Friday? Or do we know yet?

This is as much as we know at this point. It's not kickstands up until 10 am so you could haul down Fri morning easy.

Any chance you work somewhere closer to the KC area? I'd like to take you up on the offer of mounting a new back tire for me, but Leavenworth is a bit of a drive (I live in eastern Jackson County, MO and work in North Kansas City).

I work in Leavenworth too, about 4.5 miles from my house, sorry. If you want to email me @ :nfoster.750cc@gmail.com, so we don't take over the thread, we can see if we can work something out. I asked a few coworkers who live in KC if they would bring it out to me if you dropped it off but they whined, hemmed, and hawed so I think that is out.

It wasn't Google Maps that got it wrong. The first post reads "We'll ride forest roads and throw in some trail sections as we make our way down to Ozark, MO."

It looks like my brother saves the day again. He can do Saturday and Sunday, and I'm 99% sure I've got weekend beeper covered.

So, Scott and I plan to hook up with you guys in Ozark, AR on Saturday morning. He's got a trailer.

So, count on the brothers Baumgartner to be there.
