Arkansas Iron Butt 500?

Post by MacWildcat »

I must be a glutton for punishment or already feeling cabin fever! I was toying with the idea of organizing a 500 mile gravel road ride in Arkansas. It would take some careful planning, especially available fuel stops during the evening hours. I'm pretty sure I already have enough prior route data to create a interesting loop. Probably work best as a late spring or early fall ride. 500 miles on the gravel would end up being close to a 24 hour experience... fill the camelback with Red Bull folks.

I would do it if time permits. Just to test your sanity, let me ask. Are you talking about riding in the Ozarks at night? , Ok, I guess you are. I scare myself riding in the daylight down there. You ever hear of this animal they call a deer? Would you want to be the guy to go over the side of the road in the dark? Where the hell is Larry, he was just here?

I'm in as long as it is a 2 day affair only riding during daylight. You young bucks need to get a few years seasoning under your belts, before you get so rambunctious.

A weekend in the ozarks is always a good idea, David H

If time allows, I am in! Who would not go on a ride with Larry!!!

Though 500 miles a gravel in a day may be more doable in KS than in Arkansas

Let's see where it goes :)

You guys probably already know this about me, but I'd rather do 150 miles of really interesting stuff taking my time to enjoy some breaks, photos, cool waterfalls, etc. Not that this idea does not sound fun!

Two events sort got me thinking about this type of ride; The Baja 1000 and the endurance border ride out in western KS. To lessen the risk involved, it would be prudent to have some sort of checkpoint system. I was thinking maybe habing a center hub with loops in different directions. Fuel is another reason I was thinking a hub location would be a good idea.
I thought about the deer issue, there is also turkey, beer and elk! There is definitely a level of craziness here.

Put it together and see who shows up.
Riding at night through the forest is not too bad. The dust is the only real problem that I see, hard to see through with a headlight.
There are 3,4,maybe 5 of us near Russellville, AR. who might be interested.

To add to the fun, put a deck of cards at the furthest point of each loop. Take a card when you get there. Make it a poker run. Yep, honor system in effect.

I'm "Green" with envy at the wit of you two. I just wonder who this guy might be? Who would want to hit wild turkeys to ride better?
