Saturday 05/26/07 Ride from Lawrence?

Post by Greenboots »

Sure, it's short notice, but here goes... Does anybody want to ride Saturday 05/26/07 at 9:00 AM starting from the North Lawrence Burger King parking lot? It's 100 yards southeast of Interstate 70, Exit 204, "East Lawrence Exit". Burger King is on the east side of North Third St. (also known as US Hwy 40 and US Hwy 59). There's plenty of trailer parking on the east side of the street, at the Tanger Outlet Mall.

My buddy Dave O. will be riding his new-to-him Honda XR650R and I will be on my 2004 KTM 625 SXC. I have a rare hall pass for the entire day and I would love to ride until 7:00 PM. I could do 200 or 250 miles, or less. I don't care where we go, and I haven't mapped out anything special. Toward Atcheson? Eskridge? Wamego? Mostly gravel, avoiding pavement, fast cruising, 50 or 60 MPH, intermediate riders welcome, true beginners may have a hard time keeping up. Stop for gas every 80 miles, stop for lunch, everything will be cool.

Please post if you want to ride. Want to talk about it? Call Chris at 785/766-9678 M or Dave at 785/550-3384 M.

You know the drill. Eat junk food at 8:30 AM. Ride at 9:00 AM. Location:
North Lawrence Burger King
1100 North 3rd Street, Lawrence, KS 66044 785/842-4298

It was sweet. Dave H. and Dave O. and I rode from 9 to 5. It started out bleak, with breakfast at Burger King. That place is gross. Toured the Hemphill Ranch. Then to Lone Star Lake, west to Overbrook, burgers at Shirley's, I say they are great, get the deluxe. Then west to Eskridge, west to Box Turtle, I got Dave O.'s XR stuck, flooded it, we recovered.

Rode pretty fast today. Three guys is a good group size. The recent rains left some pretty dramatic flood scenes. Big trees stuck in other big trees. A lot of crap stuck up high in trees, a lot of stream beds really rearranged, some stuff that used to be deep is shallow, some stuff that used to be mellow is steep. We saw a huge 8 foot black snake east of Eskridge, and a bunch of other snakes, plus a Red Tailed Hawk flying around with a snake. We also got into a LOT of mud east of Eskridge, we handled it but it was sticky and went on for a couple miles. No one went down, but I don't know why not. Cost me $8 at the car wash. My first ride since about October. It was a good day.

Glad to hear your skills are still intact! :) I hope you will be able to get a "kitchen pass" more often and give us a little more notice so that we can join you.

Likewise, Daryl! I've been buried in family stuff for months. We'll ride this summer. Day trips are a lot easier to sell than multi-day in the current phase of my life. But, hey, can I still ride with you guys, even if I don't break any bones? It's not really my style of riding.

I was visiting (out) in-laws in Ohio or I would have tried to join you three. Awesome ride from what I have read.

Yes, 3 is a good size. Tracy (Hayden), KC, and I covered a lot of ground quickly a few weeks ago when we met up in Cassoday. No stops except to rest (no regroups), fast pace, etc.
