Sat 11/7 KS ride - Pomona/Melvern area

Post by Creekside »

I plan on riding out to Overbrook KS (56 from Gardener, get gas there) and then heading down to Pomona ATV park, maybe buzz in there for a bit on big bike safe stuff, then some rougher roads from there to an Atlas Missile silo, more min maint to Melvern Lake/Williamsburg area. Back home I35. Plan on being in Overbrook at 9am, gassed up. Off dirt/gravel by 4pm to I35 where ever we are. Those roads don't have much gravel on them.

Probably looking at 350 miles (from east KC) with the wild eyed assumption we get the 160+ miles of rougher roads done. Shouldn't be any mud out there and the stream crossings will probably be dry. But some of those "roads" have small trees in them & are two track.

If your a lurker on the board just PM me. Anyone is welcome.

If you are going to be down to Melvern and Pomona, maybe you want to put Larry's farm on your route to hit his trails for a bit? Larry's farm is between Burlington and Garnett, KS. (12 miles W of Garnett)

Here is the pics & videos from Pomona/Melvern area. Video is of me riding on top of the old nuke missile silo and a down into closed road & old pond area. The guy I went with from advrider was just like me "I bet we can get thru that". We only had to turn around a few times, usually fences. Long day, alot of miles, heck of alot of fun.

It was a great track for just cooking it up in on my PC - never did single road of those before.

When I showed him the SPOT & how to use it, had him air down his rear tire, get food, & told him about the creeks & the big mud hole, I am sure he was wondering wtf kind of ride he just signed up for on his pretty nice ~2014 GS+big ass cases. He has a ktm500exc tho. By the end I think he was pretty amazed at what kind of crap he could ride that big thing in & was pretty stoked about riding on that Atlas silo. His friends keep their big bikes firmly on gravel. He did really well turning it around in that ditch with logs&brush, I thought I was going to have to lay mine uphill and go help. He was working sometimes with that bike & a few tight places there was concern, but he got it out. This must but whats it like to have the smaller bike - that's a new thing for me!

I just used google earth to pick out the roads that looked the worst, a few creeks & junk, and "mostly-probably make it" through and some most likely deadends (but a few weren't). The only trick I use is that I never approach a house/barn from the street to go past it, I always come up on the house from the back so you can claim ignorance & you can see pavement to get the hell out of there. For me if basecamp and google say its a road or trail in Kansas (and google earth says nah) its probably going to be good if not fenced.
