Big Bike Day!

I want to have a big bike riding day. I just put new tires on the GS and I'm ready to use them. I'm hoping to touch my tires on more dirt/gravel than concrete. I hate concrete. Who's in? Who's got a good route in the KC area? I know there is lots of gravel but what about dirt roads?

Sounds good -- pick a day and post it. You might get 10 riders or 0. It's the nature of the beast.

As for "good dualsport" routes in the KC area...well, I guess it's a relative term, right? Here is a nice 1/2 day loop that starts and ends in Leavenworth and includes some nice min maint and curvy roads for the adv bikes. Probably bad idea if muddy.

Hummm, Let's shoot for Nov 25 or 26th... Work for anyone? I really don't feel like making any decisions except for what bike to ride (I only own 1).

Thanksgiving Friday ride? Anti-black friday ride? Probably not as much fun as the ARK version last weekend, but we could cook up something here in KC or FlintHIlls or Kickapoo?

[edit] I can probably get loose a one weekend day any weekend in Nov/Dec/Jan.

TARKC probably has something later this year, south MO ride 2-3 days. Frozen Swinging Bridges tour?

Dirt Roads north of 70 - River Road just north of Leavenworth to Acthison (gets easier up north). Rook up by Acth, Kiowa by Perry, Kickapoo area is loaded with dirt roads (but I have only visited twice, once in horrible mud with Bob pushing me forever and another cut short by flat & nap in a cemetary). I have been told that north of Acthison is pretty cool in the lossey areas provided its dry by the river.

West of Topeka to Alma (Between 99 & 4) - Half of the roads off Skyline are great two track roads, the other easy gravel. I love those two tracks the most. You can easily spend a day off Skyline on two track. Very scenic. Watch your speed on those two tracks. Holes, a lane gone here and there, erosion; bricks, big rocks and crap hidden in the middle grass. Don't ride faster than you can see.

Topeka Between 4 & 75 & 99 highways triangle - that area has a great mix of gravel, min maint, and some tough stuff (rain - well it can get really bad). Carlson south of Dover gets nastier as you go south gravel to two track to atv. I like that area, but watch the roads and muddy stuff. Its a good area to make sure your back on normal gravel a few hours before dark (maybe its just me, but I find that area spookier than skyline for jacking with a stuck bike at pre-dusk). The roads change from time to time, Dragon Creek was two track now its cleaned up, at least the end I road a few weeks ago. You can spend a day in there as well. Not as scenic as Skyline but tougher, I guess. Bodark, which is mostly dirt from start to finish, has a stream crossing which is nice.

West of Alma is just normal gravel & rocky min maint roads, great for beginners - nothing gets too tough by yourself. Keep a map handy as you can get lost and go in circles but heck that fun to me. Very scenic. I could spend a day there. Did, will again...

I should cook up some tracks. But lets plan something!

South of Alta Vista I know nothing. Or Little Egypt. Or down to Emporia/Hutch ways.
