Labor Day Weekend Ride

I'm not sure where I'm going to go but over Labor Day weekend I want to ride.

I have no set route as of yet but have two thoughts in mind.

1. Ride up the Missouri River and spend time in the Loess Hills. I would leave around noon on Friday and ride to Omaha. My plan would be to ride dirt and gravel north on the east side of the river until around noon on Sunday. At that time turn south on the west side. I would plan to be back around at Omaha around Noon on Monday. To and from Omaha I would most likely be in blacktop.

2. Ride to view famous KS rock formations. Again leave around noon on Friday and ride to Manhattan, KS area on Blacktop. After that on gravel to Mushroom Rock, Coronado Heights, Chalk Pyramids, and Castle Rock (to name a few places. Get back to KC around 3 on Monday.

Both trips I would be staying in motels. Most likely go the direction of better weather.

I'm just planning now but wondering if anyone has an interest in joining me.

WOW! A chance to ride with THE GS GIANT! This is a ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME opportunity!

Eddie, refresh my memory, do you want to share a hotel room?

Sounds like fun! I'd vote for the Manhattan direction so I can visit my brother, KC, in the process...maybe he could ride along a bit, too. Maybe other Manhattan-based riders could come (Luc, Larry, Savage, etc.?)

I have an off-road ride every Memorial and Labor Day weekend at the Freeman Offroad Resort. However, I'm not sure if that is happening this Labor Day. I'll figure out what I'm doing and post back here to let you know.

 Good one Troy... you beat me to it.

Who knows Eddie I might be in. I got a RoadRunner magazine with a story about a Loess Hills trip. Sounds interesting.

Tentative plans would be to leave around 1:00 on Friday. I am still not sure which way. Both hold interest to me. Going West to see the Pyramids sounds interesting as does going north along the MO river.

I have done very little riding North of Omaha so that appeals. Seeing the Pyramids and the Smoky Hill River also has a draw.

Troy, leaving at 1:00 I think we would be past Manhattan, maybe to Sedalia or Lindsborg for Friday night.

I'm out. :(

My brother and I used to ride together all the time. Somehow life got in the way over the last year, and it's been many months since we've ridden together. He is able to get away and ride over Labor Day weekend, BUT his only motorcycle is a trail machine--not a road bike. So we are going to head down to ride some trails in Arkansas. :D

Chris, Do you have a preference as to where?

No preference really. Just let me know if you want some help planning it out. If we go north, and are nearby, Offutt used to have an outdoor museum with a SR22. Way cool.

This ride's on my radar.......... but I would have to cancel my planned trip to Knoxville flat track races the next weekend. :?

It will probably come down to weather condition forecast, and which direction you go. I like North :D

I am out. Got MU football tickets for the family that weekend so I will be in Columbia. Some buddies and I will be heading to Chadwick the following weekend if anyone wants to do some trail riding. Trying to avoid the Labor Day weekend rush.

I left KC around 12:15 in the rain. It rained until Platte City where I met up with Chris. From there we rode blacktop to St Joe. From there we rode gravel and mm roads to Shenandoah, Iowa. Tomorrow we are going to follow the Missouri River north along east side. Sometime on Sunday cross river and head south.

Ok, I'm a little well maybe a lot new to this spot thing, it's kind of cool!

This is where I like to have club meeting to discuss and show this middle age guy how these things work!

That is all dirt. It is a cut through Loess soil. The Loess Hills run along the Missouri River through Iowa. They are beautiful.

Roads like that are common in the area, however that is the deepest cut we have seen on this trip.

Here is a view of the Loess Hills.

This pic is a little over 180 degree view. The left is looking east. The right is looking NW.

You missed the steamboat Bertrand at De Soto National Wildlife Refuge between Missouri Valley and Blair.
