Pomme de terre Lake April 27-29th

Come join us on a ride at the lake. The ride will consist of grist mills, historical sites if we can find them, and as much gravel and water crossings as we can find. There will be a 30-40 mile ride on Friday afternoon. We plan on doing about a 200 mile loop on Saturday kickstands up at around 10am. (I always wanted to type that :D) I am staying til Monday. Troy has volunteered his track mapping skills for this ride and I appreciate that. So thanks Troy.

So here is my plan. Friday will consist of trailering down to the lake before noon. I own a fifth wheel that will be used as basecamp. (Already at the lake) In other words if you camp you can use my microwave or stove, etc. No big deal.

We will be staying at the Nemo Landing Campground on the east side of the lake.
Cost of camping is $12 a night for tent only. 12-14 dollars non electric. 18 dollars for electric per night.

Reservations and more info. can be found here http://www.recreation.gov. Type in Nemo Landing. My fifth wheel will be in site 080. There are 5 non-electric and 3 electric sites next to mine that are available. They are waterfront. 8)

If camping is not your thing, then let me recommend Nemo Bridge Resort just across the bridge to west. Two weeks ago I stayed there and the rooms have been updated and the owners are real nice folks. Off season rates are in effect at $45 a night. thats two doubles beds, but please call to verify if interested. Did I mention these are kitchenettes? http://www.nemobridgeresort.com

Currently there are four of us commited to the ride. The more the merrier.

More details to come. Thanks Klred

That is a great lake to ride around.

Not far is a Amish General Store. N37 48.636 W92 53.628 It is open on Saturday and is worth stopping by. When I stumbled upon it a few years ago there were making homemade ice cream.

The Motel T Club of Springfield was there when I stopped. In the parking lot at the same time were bicycles, horse and buggies, Motel Ts, Motel As and my GS. Quite a collections of transportation.

PS. You link to the resort is not complete, you forgot the .com. http://nemobridgeresort.com/

Sorry about the bad link. Thanks for the correction. I have been going down to this area for 30+ years, love it down there. Riding will be enjoyable for sure. Troy tells me you have a lot of experience riding this area. We will kindly accept any information you have and put it into the ride plan.

Thanks again, Klred

Guys, I've been distracted a lot lately and am just now getting around to planning routes, POIs, etc. As of right now, I don't know that I'll be able to make this ride, but I'm building routes, and I have to say, I'm starting to get excited about the possibilities!

I have not personally ridden the area around Pomme de Terre and Harry S. Truman Reservoir much. Three of us stumbled onto a great, rugged road with a creek crossing last year, so I'm including it in the routes this time around. It runs through "Button Hollow", and the satellite imagery and county maps are showing some exciting possibilities in this valley. I found one road that has 3 major creek crossings. It will only be doable if the water is low. Fun to go investigate regardless--I hope you guys are up for adventure!

The routes will include at least a couple of cool, old bridges:

Rough Hollow Bridge

Dorman Bridge

This sounds like a cool place to stop, but I don't see a store in the satellite images for this spot. Are you sure this is correct?

Ok, so we are getting closer to the 27th. Here's the deal there has been a couple of guys that have cancelled on me. This leaves two beds open in my fifth wheel, there also is floor space for two.

The first two that post up get a bed. The next two get the floor. Snoring and farting allowed. The latter preferably outside. Double bunking not allowed. The camping is cheap so I won't worry about camping fees. Currently there are three of us that will ride.

Troy has been working on the rides and they will be great.
So far what we have talked about looks pretty interesting.

Chime in let's RIDE.

You are right. That waypoint was an estimate. The road is correct. It looks to be closer to this waypoint. N37 49.292 W92 55.928 It is The Lead Mine Country Store , 176 St Road YY , Tunas, MO 65764

I don't recall much food. More of an interesting area because of the Amish and interesting store with cold drinks.

Bennett Springs is not far away and they have good place to lunch.

OK, so another friend of mine (whom I trust WAY more than ajayhawkfan--that guy is shifty  ) sent me this waypoint for the Amish general store--just barely W of the point Eddie gave us. It's the green roof building.

Lead Mine Country Store

He also said the eating is good at Rooster's BBQ & Tunas Country Shoppe, which is located a bit W of the Lead Mine Country Store in Tunas

Eddie, you mentioned seeing Model-T's at the store. Probably these guys--there is a photo of the cars at the store and the home-made ice-cream.

Car94, Hopefully you can make it. I had a good time when we cruised Cass County. Saturdays ride will start late enough so that day trippers can make it down in the a.m., the good news it's not that far. Hope to see you.

Routes

You can view the routes on DualsportMaps.com (DSM)
http://www.dualsportmaps.com/?link=103642

DSM allows you to download to GPX format, but I've provided some files here to make it even easier. I recommend this GPX file that is track-based. (More on that later.)
http://www.rideforum.net/files/Pomme_de_Terre.gpx

If you really requires "routes", this file may work for you instead.
http://www.rideforum.net/files/Pomme_de ... ROUTES.gpx

Everybody has their own system for how they use their GPS-- a topic too big to explain here! Depending on which GPS device you have, these files may or may not work for you. I can tell you both work on the Garmin 60 series. From what I understand, the tracks-based file may not work for older Zumo models that don't do tracks.

One reason I use tracks instead of routes is that with tracks on my 60CS, I can have them all visible at the same time on my map which lets me ride along and see other options as I go along. With routes, I can only have one route showing on my map at a time. Routes provide navigation assistance while tracks just show the line. For dualsport and off-road riding, I don't want navigation assistance, I just want to see the line and I'll follow it. These are reasons I use tracks instead of routes.

The tracks I created have a high degree of detail, and therefore a lot of points. Because of this, the "route" for a day is actually several track segments. Here's how to use these files:

I have created a "LONG" route and 2 "SHORT" route options.

LONG route (160 miles)
Designed for the all day Saturday ride

LONG-A (32 miles)
Campground SE to a point NE of Buffalo, MO

LONG-B (21 miles)
From where A stops E to Bennett Springs State Park. This little town offers the 4th largest spring in MO as well as Hillbilly Burgers--supposedly a good burger. I assume gas is available here?

LONG-C (13 miles)
Bennett Springs NW to the Amish "Lead Mine Country Store", which would make a nice pit-stop for a drink and perhaps ice-cream if they are making some.

LONG-D (12 miles)
N from Amish store to Chapel Bluff Rd. Optionally, if you did not eat lunch at Bennett Springs, take LONG-J (8 miles) into Tunas to eat at Rooster's BBQ.

LONG-E (16 miles)
NE to Ha Ha Tonka State Park where you can stretch your legs as you hike to see the old castle.

LONG-F (17 miles)
North then W to Mack's Creek area

LONG-G (15 miles)
N through Mack's Creek area to Climax Springs

LONG-H (14 miles)
Climax Springs S to Mule Shoe Conservation Area

LONG-I (21 miles)
SW back to camp at Pomme de Terre Lake

SHORT routes (81 or 32 miles)
You can string the "SHORT" segments together to create a couple of recommended routes.

SHORT option #1 (81 miles)
This route includes what could be some VERY good and very rugged creek crossings, but like most of this stuff, it is untested by me. Things may not work out as planned! You have been warned. 8)

SHORT-A (16 miles)
NW from camp at Pomme de Terre Lake across the dam and includes the old Dorman bridge.

SHORT-B (16 miles)
This is possibly the gold-mine segment! It includes 4 creek crossings. The first half of this track I've ridden before. Good, rough road with a muddy creek crossing--could be an issue if the area has seen much rain. The last half starts where you make a sharp turn to the East. I've confirmed this is open road on the MODOT county map, but I figure maybe a 50% chance this is actually road you can travel. The satellite imagery shows 3 significant creek crossings (See Bauer Rd). If it works out, it will surely be the highlight of the routes.

SHORT-C (24 miles)
N then E then S around Granny's Acres Conservation Area

SHORT-D (16 miles)
S to State Hwy U. Includes what looks to be a remote road that crosses a creek. MODOT map says this is in fact a legit road, so hopefully it will work out! If not, route around--it's called "Adventure".

At the end of this segment, you can follow alternate SHORT-F (7miles) W for about 2 miles to see the old Rough Hollow bridge.

SHORT-E (9 miles)
S back to camp at Pomme de Terre Lake.

SHORT option #2 (32 miles)
Only have an hour or 2 to ride? This is the option for you. Sting these tracks together to make the loop.

SHORT-A (16 miles)
NW from camp at Pomme de Terre Lake across the dam and includes the old Dorman bridge.

SHORT-F (7 miles)
A larger part of this segment includes a rugged road section that may not work out, but the work-around is easy--just stay on the main road, which will be obvious. Near the end of this segment is the old Rough Hollow bridge. Stop and take some photos.

SHORT-E (9 miles)
S back to camp at Pomme de Terre Lake.

This ride sounds like a bunch of fun. I live in Oak Grove now but, I grew up 15 minutes from Pomme De Terre lake. (My mom still lives outside of Nemo) I just seen this ride so I don't know if I could make it but, if you want to do it again sometime I know of some fun gravel roads and low water bridges. Also I stayed at Nemo resort last June and staying there again this June. It is nice and the owners are great. Plus they do have a fishing dock for resort occupants only. Also if you want to find an Old time store Check out Scotts General Store in Iconium Missouri. It would be about 30ish miles north west of Nemo. It has a Facebook page to check it out also. There is also a old time ice cream drive in place about 10-15 minutes from Nemo on 65 hwy. Good burgers and Ice cream.

TL*5, thanks for the info. Hope you can make it and offer the local color.

I'm told the Peach Nehi floats are the main attraction at Scott's General Store in Iconium. I can vouch that the BBQ at the Toadsuck Grill in Iconium is very good, but they are only open part of the year and even then just a few days a week. Cool place.

I had a ride last year that went through there and planned to stop at the general store, but it was later than I had planned so just ate BBQ and rolled on. At one point, I planned on camping along the way. I called the store and Scott offered that I could camp across the street from the store and use the store bathroom. Pretty cool folks!

A highlight road section of my Glade Top ride in the fall of 2011 was a gnarly, rocky dirt road with a muddy creek crossing we found. I was very surprised because Google Map I used to build the route showed it as a yellow highway looking road. Here it is:
http://g.co/maps/n256e

TL*5, I wonder if you have the inside scoop on this bit of road? So I'm zooming in on that area and find another road connecting to it that looks REALLY interesting with 3, obvious significant water crossings. It's hard to see the road in the Google imagery because most of the road was under water when they took the pics. Google calls the road "Hickory Co K-2":
http://g.co/maps/jkqex

However, the Bing aerial images show the road and the crossings quite well. The road is labeled "Bauer Rd" on the Bing map:
http://binged.it/IlaP7I

MODOT Benton County Map shows the road as "Weaver Church Rd":
http://www.modot.mo.gov/newsandinfo/doc ... benton.pdf

So obviously the road would not be doable when the river is high, and probably too muddy after a good rain. This section is SHORT-B in my tracks.

Yeah, I don't know about that. I do know that several of the roads around Truman dead end into the lake. Fairfield that is near there was a town that is now under the lake. I know the highway leading to it dead ends. Worse case I guess would be turn around if it was under water and best case a cool new water crossing found. Although I wouldn't cross unless you could see the bottom.
