March 16-17: Where are we riding?

I'm going to have my wife's KLX up and running again sometime this week, which means she will be itching to go for a dual sport ride. I figured I might as well get the ball rolling on getting a plan figured out so that way when she asks me where we're riding, I might have an answer for her.

So, what is sounding good to everyone? I was considering doing Troy's White Cloud loop from a couple of weeks ago again, but we are definitely open to whatever, as long as it is not too far from the KC area.

My wife and I were toying with the idea of going camping this weekend but if we stay in town I would love to do the White Cloud loop, and actually complete it for once :D

I think we should all meet for breakfast again if we get enough interest. Eating together and socializing was a great way to kick off the day last Saturday.

Just caught your other post. Planning at lunch sounds like a good idea.

Sounds good. We'll probably just plan on doing the White Cloud ride on Saturday if that works for you. Unless anyone else has a better plan??

I say we do breakfast at 8:00 and plan on being ready to hit the road by 9:00. I'm fine with doing the Depot again, but if you have any better places, let me know.

Breakfast anywhere works for me. Not picky. Depot at 8am works great but if anyone wants to change venues that works too. Pullman Place, Homer's, Ihop, or anywhere else sounds great too.

Let's make it official-

Breakfast at the Depot in Leavenworth at 8:00.

To steal a line from Troy, kickstands up at 9:00 for a run to White Cloud, most likely following the same route we took last time.

I may join in. Just so I can plan with the spousal unit what time do you think we would be back in Leavenworth?

Well, my tracks say it was about 5.5 hours moving. My trip originated from Weston. Figure lunch, fuel, photos, ect on top of that.

Count me in. If I ride the GS will you guys help me pick the thing up when I toss it in the muddy parts? :D

Ok can you tell me where White Cloud is? Is the 5.5 hours a loop or maybe someone can guide me to a previous map. Sounds fun. I think..... with a KLR. Well see.

Thanks in advance, Brian

Heck yeah Chris. We will pick up the bike and you :D

This should be a good time.

KLRed- the route is on www.dualsportmaps.com already if you want to check it out. It may not be exact but it is close enough to tell the mrs. an approx time. This route could change dramatically in length if road conditions are...fun :D though so keep that in mind. I don't think it should be too treacherous though, if my brother comes he will be on a klr as well. I don't think you will have issues, of course I have been wrong before...

Foster, Thanks for the info. It looks like fun. If I should happen to run out of time are there major roads along the route that I could jump on to get to work? I have to be in KCK by 4pm.

Thanks, Klred

KLRed, I'm afraid the route up to White Cloud puts you a REALLY long way from work if you get up into Doniphan County before needing to split off. Basically, your options will be Hwy 7 and 36. You could just do the part from Leavenworth up to Atchison -- a really short run--and head home. Or go all the way up to Wathena, and then take 36 E to St. Joe and head home....LONG highway ride!

Troy, Thanks for the tip. Approximately how long is the ride to Atchison? Then on to Wathena?

If you follow this link (like Foster gave you), you can see the route and the how many miles each track segment is:

http://test.dualsportmaps.com/?link=102895

It's 7 miles of pavement from Leavenworth up to the start of the River Road. Figure 15 minutes.

It's 14 miles of dirt river road to Atchison plus another few miles of city pavement to get into Atchison. Figure less than 45 minutes--depends on how many breaks and how long they are. If it's muddy, all bets are off!

It's 23 miles of dirt roads (and some gravel) from Atchison to Wathena. With a few photo stops, etc, figure at least an hour. If it's muddy, it will be the end of the ride most likely!

After that...it's over 30 mile of mostly dirt roads up to White Cloud...another hour+.

The route we ran last time is 43 miles back to Atchison....2 hours.

Flat tires, mechanical failure, lose a rider....time can dramatically change!

Alright, we got my brother's tire on tonight so he and I are ready to rock. We will see y'all nice and early down at Santa Fe Depot. Took a bit to get it installed but my homemade tire changing station worked out pretty well. :D

I will be attending the ride as well, so i will see y'all in the morning.

The new tire makes it a whole different bike it actually wants to drop into turns instead of the square that my brother helped me take off earlier this evening.

As of 11:30 pm 3/16/12 weather.com says 20% chance of rain and windy.

Great ride, there were 5 of us so fewer/shorter stops meant we got through a bit quicker than last time. Had a late lunch in Atchison where we met Katbeans.

Maybe next time we can change up the return route, and add in that track east of Wathena.

Here we are trying to see Iowa......
