Trails off of Barry Road?
So, I saw on kcsb that there are trails off of Barry road and tiffany springs parkway somewhere. I live not too far and was wondering if anyone had any info on these? I am betting that they are not legal but I am hoping that I am wrong. I would LOVE a place closer to home to ride!

You can blame a drunk ATV rider for the trails being closed. Apparently a crash caused by the drunk ATV required a life flight helicopter and that closed down the airport for an extended period of time. Thus, the trails were closed There are signs all over it so ride at your own risk....

Where is the access, if one were so inclined?

I think the chance of being busted on those trails is very high. They are definitely off-limits. Was a legal motorized use area over a decade ago. The county has attempted plans to turn the area into a park with mountain bike trails, etc. a few times. It continues to sit and rot. There is an old rock quarry on the land, and one of the proposed ideas I heard at a meeting was to allow for a trials bicycle and motorcycle area in the quarry. That would have been really cool. Almost zero chance of the area being opened back up to ATV, motorcycle, or 4x4 use.
I never got to use the trails--I moved to the metro about 7 years ago. You can see places to access the trails off NW Hampton Rd.
Welcome to Kansas. VERY few places to legitimately ride trails.

Responsible, repeat that -- responsible, dirt bike, and serious DS riders, can join ($200 / yr) and ride on Bender's property just east of Big Springs, KS. You will need a sponsor to join and I will do that for people who have both their riding pleasure and the landowner's interests uppermost. This land is the location of the hare scramble and the Best of Kansas races (all of which I entered and completed so I can attest to the condition of the trails). You have a very forgiving MX track, a grass track (or TT for we older riders) and up to 8.5 miles of very ride-able trails used for the hare scramble course. The trails are not technical as are some of the trails at Perry. You could easily ride a KLR on these trails. (If you do just be ready for me to pester you and pass you.) I can guarantee that you will get your money's worth for riding here, and it is not too far from the KC metroplex.

Can you camp at Bender's property? This sounds intriguing. Can you ride once before paying the 200 and committing for the year? I think the important thing for me as I attempt to learn and improve my skills, is the descriptive word you used, "forgiving." It would be nice to not have issues quite so frequently, while attempting things that are over my head. It is easy to forget that many of you have been doing this for decades and just because I watch y'all do it, doesn't mean that I should follow.
It would be nice to have trails as close as Barry road, but I don't want to be part of the problem. I think that trespassing and riding places we shouldn't ends up creating a lot of problems for all riders, in the long run. It is tempting, but the cost is more than the rewards it seems.

ESPECIALLY true when attempting to follow Stu! FAST and smooth! I had to cry uncle.Foster wrote:...just because I watch y'all do it, doesn't mean that I should follow.
AMEN. It is true that "we" are our own worst enemy. The greenies hate us, and they don't have to dig deep to build a case. I just received and watched the new MOTO 3 movie. (WOW!) I heard a couple phrases that made me wince. I mean I get it, but I know how the other side perceives us. Our community needs to change our language.Foster wrote:It would be nice to have trails as close as Barry road, but I don't want to be part of the problem. "We get out early and abuse the desert before it wakes up."
"Let's hit the trails and tear it up."
Then you have 4x4 clubs with names like "Trail Damage".
Language like this is not helping our image outside of our community. ...and we HAVE to quiet these bikes down!

I agree! We should change our language. I will say, although this is true that it just wouldn't be as much fun to say, "let's go ride respectfully, quietly, and safely on the trails." "Tear it up," does SOUND fun, even if that isn't what you are actually doing.troy wrote:ESPECIALLY true when attempting to follow Stu! FAST and smooth!
