Re: KTM 500 EXC cooling system overhaul
The other regret that I have about the overhaul was spending the extra money to get the Samco kit that included JCS hose clamps. I wish I had ordered only the hoses. There is nothing inherently wrong with the JCS clamps that come with the kit. They are high quality, heavy duty clamps with nice round...

Re: KTM 500 EXC cooling system overhaul
It's great that you got to ride with Bo last weekend. And it wasn't a tree I hit this time, but a big rock that was on the inside of a hard ride turn in very tight single track. Had I been just an inch or two to the left, I would have cleared it. Instead, the bottom edge of the radiator guard caught...

Re: KTM 500 EXC cooling system overhaul
Luckily, the split only went half way around the hose, so there was still half of it intact to provide some mechanical strength. Bo had some "self-fusing silicone tape" in his kit ( https://www.amazon.com/Permatex-82112-Self-Fusing-Silicone-Tape/dp/B00X8T3MVY ) that he thought would at least hold un...

KTM 500 EXC cooling system overhaul
It's been over a month since I hit a rock on a remote single track in Colorado and split one of my radiator hoses open. The damaged hose could not be purchased separately -- it and two other hoses are part of a $100 thermostat assembly from KTM. I'm sure I could have found a hose to fit, and replace...

Finally got some time to post my pics and vids from the ride. If the Picassa embed at the bottom isn't working (which is probably the case), just click on the link below, or copy and paste the following URL to another tab or browswer window to go directrly to the "Tarkansas Spring 2016" Picasa album...

Ryan-
Pre-ride or not, I probably could have given you a lift to NWA. I was driving down there 2 weeks out of every 3 until just last week.
But I rolled off the Walmart project last week, so the only thing taking me down there now are the TARKC rides.

Unfortunately, neither of the Dirt Trick timing chain tensioners fit my 2014 KTM 500 EXC.

Re: 2014 KTM 500 EXC w/2015 engine? Valve shim confusion!
As for the two-stroke comment... I have yet to ride a two-stroke that made me want to go out and buy one. Rick, I love the concept behind your Freeride, but wish they made a bigger one. It felt way too small for my 6'3" frame. I like Randy's new Beta X-Trainer, too ( especially the oil-injection fea...

Re: 2014 KTM 500 EXC w/2015 engine? Valve shim confusion!
I neglected to mention the part where two of my feeler gauge blades had stuck together, and couldn't figure out why all of a sudden there was even less than the minimum clearance (.1mm). Thought maybe I had re-installed the rocker arm incorrectly. I've got to say, though, that getting to the valves,...

2014 KTM 500 EXC w/2015 engine? Valve shim confusion!
That you may learn from my mistakes... I hadn't checked my valve clearance in a while, and finally got around to it this week. Very early in the bike's life (after about a month), I had to make a minor adjustment to one of the exhaust valves, but hadn't checked them since. Both my exhaust valves we...

Re: 2014 KTM 500 EXC seat height reduction
I don't check RideForum.net very often, but I see my brother answered the tire question. I don't tend to ride standing up. Probably in part because I've always installed comfy seats on my bikes. On the KTM, I also had the problem of the handlebars being too low for me when I stood (I'm 6'3"). I just...

Re: Chadwick - Feb 20 & 21
Am also considering a stronger aftermarket shift lever, so that it's less likely to end up being jammed into the side of the case in a fall. This is the second time the shifter has punctured the ignition cover. The first time was shortly after I brought it home from the dealer, and it fell over in m...

Re: Chadwick - Feb 20 & 21
Bo and I have both been searching for a ignition-side protection, but had not come up with anything. Bo found this for the clutch side, and had actually fabricated a small piece of aluminum to perform a similar function on the ignition side. http://slavensracing.com/shop/clutch-case-guard-by-str-for...

Re: 2014 KTM 500 EXC seat height reduction
After just one day riding at Chadwick (should have been two, but I spent the first day scouring Springfield for a new rear tire), my rear end told me that it's not at all happy with the new, thinner seat.

2014 KTM 500 EXC seat height reduction
When I bought my 500 back in September of '14, I knew the first thing that had to go was the stock seat. I loved the Seat Concepts seat on my DR-Z400s, so naturally I went to them for new seat for the KTM. There was a wide choice of seat heights available: stock, low (-15mm), tall (+20mm), or extra ...
